RECORD: China Sends First Woman Astronaut into Space

Beijing – (AFP) – China on Saturday launched its most ambitious space mission to date, sending its first female astronaut into orbit and bidding to achieve the country’s first manual space docking.
Shenzhou-9 — China’s fourth manned space mission — blasted off on schedule at 6:37 pm (1037 GMT) from the remote Gobi desert in the nation’s northwest, state television pictures showed.
Chang Wanquan, commander-in-chief of China’s manned space programme, said the craft had entered orbit, and declared the launch a “complete success”.

The crew was headed by Jing Haipeng, a veteran astronaut who had gone to space twice already. Liu Wang, who has been in the space programme for 14 years, will be in charge of manual docking manoeuvres.

Meanwhile Liu Yang, 33, who has created a stir in the media and online for becoming China’s first woman to travel to space,

Saturday Vanguard investigations revealed that the late PHCN vandal, whose identity could not be ascertained at press time was electrocuted when he tried to vandalize the facilities at the Industrial Cluster, Naze, Owerri North local council area of Imo State.

Tragedy: Lorry Kills Pregnant Woman, Delivers Her of Premature Twin Foetus


It was tears, wailing and weeping on Wednesday, when the people of Oghara, in the Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, woke up to meet a sight of horror, they called a taboo in Urhobo Land, when a lorry, with no plate number, loaded to the brim with sharp sand, killed a pregnant woman, burst her belly and forced a twin foetus out of her womb. The accident also claimed the lives of two other men.

Kano Crises: JTF Reports Killing of Four Terrorist Elements

JTF recently claimed an attack on this Boko Haram hideout in Kano where a German engineer was found brutally murdered.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) has reported the killing of four persons today in a dawn shootout with “terrorist elements” in the Ungwar Uku area of Taurani Local Government Area.

In a press statement, JTF said the encounter followed extensive intelligence build-up as a result of information supplied to it by people in Kano State. It said the hideout was suspected to be the media centre of the terrorist elements operating in Kano.

Bodija Market: Communal Clash Killed One Person

One person was shot dead while an Inspector with the Nigerian Police Force was reportedly stabbed, severally on the head in a clash at the famous Bodija market in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

The clash which has left the market deserted, had the market police station, a number of stores and at least 10 cars destroyed set ablaze.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo state police, Mr Tambari Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said five people including the man who led the arson have been arrested.

Gunmen Kill $ Policemen in Borno, Taraba States



GUNMEN on Tuesday evening ambushed a six-man police patrol team on the Maiduguri-Bama Road and killed three of them. They injured three others, including the driver of the vehicle. The incident occurred at 5 p.m.
An eyewitness said that the gunmen ambushed the policemen, who were in a Golf Volkswagen vehicle near the Dalori Quarters.
He said: “When the gunmen opened fire on the patrol vehicle, the driver moved on, swerving on the road to dodge the gunshots. It was in the course of attempting to escape from the scene that two of the policemen were shot dead.”
