3rd Mainland Bridge To Shut Down From July 1st

THE third mainland bridge in Lagos will be closed to traffic for repairs in four months starting from July 1, 2012. The first signals for the proposed closure came through several banners hung in strategic places that show that maintenance works would be carried out on the all-important bridge from July 1 to Nov 6, 2012.

But Thursday, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Lateef Ibirogba, confirmed the development and said plans are in top gear for provision of alternative routes.

BREAKING NEWS: NCAA Suspends Flight Operations Of Air Nigeria

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended flight operations of Air Nigeria, the troubled airline owned by Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim with immediate effect.

The suspension arose from allegations, first revealed by Saharareporters, that the airline was in dire financial distress unable to fulfill its obligations to employees, lessors and airline ground services in different countries around West Africa, Middle East and Europe.

Court Threatens: "We Will Release Boko Haram Suspects".

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has threatened to strike out the charges filed against nine suspected members of the fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, by the police.

The presiding judge, Justice Abdul Kafarati frowned at the in-ability of the prosecution to bring their witnesses to give evidence in the case against the suspects.

At the resumed hearing of the suit on Thursday, the prosecution counsel, Bernard Nnamdi applied for an adjournment on account of their in-ability to produce the witnesses in court.

The 31-year-old, from Toronto, Canada – who lost his legs when he was just five years old – reached the summit of the 19,341ft high Mt. Kilimanjaro on Tuesday after a slow, gruelling and awe-inspiring trek.

Mr West was born with sacral agenesis, a genetic disorder that left his lower spine poorly developed and his legs permanently crossed.
He had his legs removed below the knees at the age of three and, two-years-later, had them amputated to below his pelvis.

BREAKING NEWS: Gun Shots, Bom Blasts in Kano, As Fresh Violence Began In Kaduna

Gun shots and blast were reported in parts of Na’ibawa, Sheka, Karkasara and Shagari Quarters of Kano metropolis last night.
Though details of the violence were sketchy at press time, LEADERSHIP gathered that the gun shots and blast which occurred at about 11pm, lasted for almost an hour.

It was further gathered that some gunmen in Volkswagen Golf car attacked a police checkpoint and threw an explosive at the officers.
The gunmen were said to have fled the area and left the car with three explosives which were later detonated by the anti-bomb squad of the state command.

FIRS Sues Jimoh Ibrahim and Air Nigeria, Over N5Billion Naira Fraud

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has filed charges of evading five years tax payment of N4.86 billion naira and forgery of Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) against Air Nigeria.

A copy of the charge filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja was exclusively obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, the company’s Chairman, Mr Kinfe Kahssaye, Managing Director and Air Nigeria Development Company Limited (formerly Virgin Nigeria Airways Ltd), were joined in the 10-count charge.

Students who on Monday resumed lectures after suspension of academic activities by the University Senate vowed to continue the protest until the name, UNILAG is restored. Nevertheless, classes were opened for lectures and hostels for returning students.

However, the hitherto busy campus in Akoka was relatively sparsely populated as most students on campus were predominantly freshmen completing admission formalities, and final year students.

BREAKING NEWS: 3 Killed, Many Injured In Kaduna

As insecurity and violence mounts in Kaduna State, three persons have been reported killed this evening in Kujama.

Our source said that the corpses were still on the streets, and that several other people were injured.
Kujama is the headquarters of Chikun local government area of Kaduna State, and is a few kilometres from the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), a subsidiary of theNigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Dying Suicide Bomber Tells Police: “We Are Doing God’s Work”

In a deathbed confession, a young suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber told an officer in Bauchi that the group was “doing God’s work” and would not stop.

The youth, who appeared to be between 20-24, was critically injured when bombs detonated and the explosion tore into his body, sending pieces in every direction.

13 injured in Federal Government Girls College, FGGC, Abuloma, Port Harcourt Students’ clash

PORT HARCOURT – About 13 students of the Federal Government Girls College, FGGC, Abuloma, Port Harcourt have been reportedly hospitalized following alleged clash between some of them in SS3 and SS2.

The principal of the school could not be reached for comments on the development but sources within the FGGC confirmed that disagreement between the students of two classes started on Sunday and only snowballed into violence Wednesday, in which no fewer than 13 students were injured.

Details of the development were scanty at press time, but Vanguard gathered that the development has led to suspension of ongoing examination in the school.
Meantime, some parents and guardians were seen rushing to pick their wards or children at the school Wednesday evening.

Suspected kidnappers on Tuesday night abducted the  72-year-old mother of  the former Chairman of  Okitipupa Local Government, Mrs Maria Iwala.

Bauchi: Man Blows Up Himself With Bomb!

A young man, carrying improvised explosive devices and a pistol, blew up his arm and leg up in Bauchi yesterday. The incident, it was learnt, took place near the Federal Government Girls’ College along Bauchi-Gombe Road.

The incident was coming two weeks after a suicide bomber attacked a church in Yelwa area of Bauchi metropolis in which at least 21 people were killed and more than 60 persons injured.

Bauchi State Police Commissioner Mohammed Ladan confirmed yesterday’s incident, but did not give further details.

FG To Provide 3.5m Jobs in Agricultural Sector

The Federal Government is to create 3.5 million jobs in the agricultural sector by 2015.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, made this known on Tuesday at Owode-Ede in Osun during the launch of the Growth Enhancement Support Scheme on Fertiliser and Seeds.

Adesina also said government had set a production target of 20 million metric tonnes of food by 2015 from local production.

To prevent her husband from further looking outside for sexual satisfaction, a woman has done the unthinkable by pouring hot water on his private part.

Her husband was seriously injured and was rushed to a hospital where he is being treated.

BREAKING NEWS: Italian Commits Suicide in EFCC Custody

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the death of a 52 year old Italian, Mr. Mauro Zanin, who died in the bathroom of the Commission’s detention facility in Abuja, early Tuesday morning.
A statement by the EFCC’s spokesperson Wilson Uwujarena, stated that the Mr Zanin who was arrested for fraudulently obtaining the sum of $111,000 from Gladwaters Nigeria Limited, passed away, two days before he was scheduled to appear in court.
