Suspected assassins this  afternoon shot Mr. Steve Nwosu, Editor of Daily Sun newspaper.

A competent source close The Sun  disclosed that Mr. Nwosu was shot at Mazamaza as he made his way to The Sun’s Corporate Headquarters at Coscharis Street, Apapa. The scene described by the source is not too far away from the Sun office. 

“He had gone to the bank with his driver to withdraw some money,” said the source. He was shot on the head, and quickly rushed to the hospital where he is being treated.”

What Da Hell: Unity Bank Retires 500 Workers

                                   

Unity Bank Plc Monday  said about 500 members of its staff will proceed on retirement, in line with a programme aimed at reinvigorating its workforce.

The bank also said that about 389 members of staff in various departments were promoted while salary increments by way of notches were also given to another 1,855.

A statement from the bank explained that the move was aimed at raising productivity and competitive position in the industry. “With the implementation of the programme, the bank has announced staff promotions, retirements and will embark on new recruitments to fill vacancies,” it said.

Abuja Demolition: Residents of New Kuchigoro Protests

                      

Residents of New Kuchigoro, a small resident in Abuja, were unhappy and protested against the demolition of their houses by the Abuja Development Control Department.

The Protesting residents gave many reasons why they are protesting.

Firstly, They were only given 1 week quit notice which is too small to give them enough time to relocate.

Secondly, most of the residents had gone to their offices before the demolition team came.

Thirdly, Some of the residents died during the demolition.

Also, most of the residents are non-indigenes.

But Mrs Josie Mudashiru, Head of Public Relations Unit, Department of Development Control, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, told NAN that the people were given sufficient notice.

Mainstreet Bank: Sacked Bank Workers Protest Over Nonpayment Of Entitlements

Sacked workers of Mainstreet Bank Plc in Lagos on Tuesday protested the nonpayment of their entitlements by the bank and accused  their union leaders of complicity in the matter.

The workers, who were sacked on June 22, blocked the gates of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks and Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) and  accused their leaders of being insensitive to their plight.

The spokesperson of the protesting workers, Mr Eyo Usanga, who addressed the protesters at the entrance of union’s office in Alausa, said more than 800 workers were sacked without benefits.

"Some people had worked for about 30 years and the bank terminated their job without any reason.

"The management of the bank said they will pay only N30, 000 as benefit which is not acceptable, " he said.

Dead Channels TV Reporter Wins CNN Posthumous Award

The Cable News Network (CNN) on Sunday recognized the contributions of murdered Channels Television’s reporter, Enenche Akogwu and Zakariya Isa of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) to journalism in Africa.

Both journalists died while covering the violence in Northern Nigeria and were both this year’s recipients of the Free Press Africa Award, for their work in Nigeria.

Zakariya, a cameraman for the NTA, was killed in October 2011, and Enenche, a news reporter with Channels Television, was shot and killed, having covered the Kano bomb blast in January this year.

May their souls rest in peace. They paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

No Going Back On Plot To Impeach Jonathan, Says Reps

                              

There was mixed reactions when the Reps threatens to impeach President Jonathan if Budget is not implemented properly. Some people condemned the Reps while others support it.

But despite these mixed reactions, the House of Reps, said in a statement that the move, which it has now confirmed to be its official resolution, was “noble, bold and patriotic” and would not be forced down by “intimidation and blackmail”.

Personally, the House of Reps is taking a wrong step. They make statements that put chaos and confusion within Nigeria.

A bomb blast has just occurred in Bauchi State at Bayan Gari Killing a small boy and injuring about 10 people this evening.


This was confirmed by the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ladan.


Witnesses say the explosion occurred at about 6.40 p.m. when Muslims were about to break their Ramadan fast and that the incident caused tension and panic in the area.
Boko Haram Sect are suspected to be behind the attack.

The spokesperson for the command, Ms Ngozi Braide said the corporal, attached to the Marine Police, Oworonsoki Division in Lagos, was being detained at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba.

Police Kill Resident at Makoko Waterfront, Arrest 12 Others

Tragedy struck today at the Makoko waterfront, which is currently under demolition by the Lagos State Government, as a police corporal shot and killed one of the residents who were appealing for more time to pack their properties before the demolition of their homes.

The victim, identified as Timothy Azinpono, was said to be advising protesting residents on how to conduct themselves during a planned peaceful protest before the police corporal aimed and shot at him.

A witness, Mr. Opaloba, who was present during the incident, said children of the affected residents, mainly secondary school students, were peacefully showing placards at a considerable distance from the police and Kick Against Indiscipline [KAI] officials

Usher Stepson Dies After Jetski Accident

                                

Usher's 11-year-old stepson has passed away this morning from injuries suffered in a tragic jetski accident in Georgia earlier this month.

Doctors removed 11-year-old Kyle Glover from life support after it was determined the injuries were too severe to overcome. We're told Kyle's mother, Tameka Foster, struggled tremendously with the decision.

Impeachment Threat: Jonathan Invites Tambuwal For Talks

                               

President Goodluck Jonathan wants an immediate end to the cold war between him and the House of Representatives. He has invited Speaker Aminu Tambuwal for peace talks to iron out their differences. The duo were scheduled to meet last night at the Presidential Villa for the talks.

The Presidency and the House are locked in a stand-off over alleged slow pace at which the 2012 Budget is being implemented with the Reps, on Thursday, threatening the President with impeachment for the situation.

Abakaliki: Chief Judge Sets 31 Inmates Free

                           

Chief Judge of Ebonyi, Justice Alloy Nwankwo has released Thirty-one inmates of Abakaliki prisons  on Friday. 

Seventeen of the inmates were granted conditional bail, one on self recognition, while 13 were discharged. Nwankwo said his action was carried out under powers conferred on him by the Criminal Justice Release from Prison Act of Nigeria.

Gunmen Attack Kogi, Yobe ,Cop Killed in Bank, Police Station Raid

                         

Five days after a bomb making factory was uncovered in Kogi State, gunmen, believed to be robbers, struck in the state, at the weekend, attacking a police station and looting a bank.

The gunmen attack, which took place in Iyara, Ijumu Local Government Area, claimed the life of a policeman.

Some gunmen also invaded a school in Yobe State and burnt  it. An eye-witness told Sunday Vanguard that the suspected robbers, who invaded the Kogi town  around 9.45p.m., on Friday, split into two and commenced their operation. They reportedly shot sporadically into the air.

16 feared dead in school bus accident in S/Africa

A school bus carrying students to a sports event collided with a minibus in South Africa’s southeast killing at least 16 and injuring 31, officials said.

The accident occurred in the Eastern Cape near the town of Cradock. The Mercedes Benz school bus was being “driven by the principal,” Ashraf Ismail, a spokesman for South Africa’s road traffic managment agency told AFP.

Lagos PHCN Workers Begin Strike

Employees of the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria (PHCN), in Lagos on Friday, embarked on an indefinite strike to press for the payment of their terminal benefits as the company gears towards full privatisation.

The President of the Senior Staff of Association of Electricity and Allied Company, Bede Opara, said the strike was necessitated by federal government's reluctance to address pending issues concerning payment of benefits to workers ahead of privatisation.

The workers, who shut down PHCN offices in the state, vowed not to return to work till their grievances had been addressed.

Man Gets 6 months Imprisonment For Stealing

An Ogudu Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos, on Thursday, sentenced an unemployed 22-year-old man to jail, after he pleaded guilty to stealing, attempted rape and conspiracy.

Saheed Adigun was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour, and no option of fine.
The prosecutor, Corporal Kemi Adeniran, said the offences were committed on July 14, 2012, at Abiola Gardens, Alausa in Ikeja.

14 killed at Batman movie premiere

                              

At least 14 people were killed and some 50 wounded Friday when a gunman opened fire at a crowded cinema premiere of the latest Batman movie in the US state of Colorado, police and media said.

Witnesses interviewed by local media described a scene of chaos at the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” saying the gunman had set off tear gas bombs and opened fire in the packed theater in Aurora, a suburb of Denver.

NLC Appeals to Government: "Withdraw Soldiers From PHCN Facilities And Resume Dialogue"

                    

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has appealed to the federal government to withdraw soldiers from facilities of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria  (PHCN), and resume meaningful dialogue with the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) towards resolving the stalemate between them.

In a statement by its President, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, the NLC pointed out today that the Chief Negotiator has yet to submit his team’s report for implementation, and that that implies the possibility of further dialogue with the workers.

The Chief Negotiator is Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the pioneer President of the NLC and the Secretary of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU).

Happy Ramadan Fast To All The Muslims

                                 

Muslims across the country are expected to join other faithful across the world to begin this year Ramadan fasting today.

Already, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Sa’ad, has urged Muslims who sight the new moon of Ramadan to communicate to relevant authorities immediately for the commencement of the fast.

Muslims are mandated to fast in the month of Ramadan for either 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the moon.
