Ten Teenage Girls Drown in a Boat Mishap on Their Way to a Wedding in Taraba
As the floods that have been predicted in strategic parts continue, at least ten teenage girls have lost their lives when their canoe capsized on their way to a wedding in Taraba one of the regions hit by the predicted flooding.
According to the head of the Red Cross in Taraba State, Manja Agwe Mathew, on Wednesday, three others who were in the canoe that capsized on the Karim River are still missing: “The bodies of 10 passengers in the canoe were recovered by local fishermen while search for the remaining three is still on,” he said.

MIT Overtakes Cambridge To Become Number One In World University Rankings
Cambridge has slipped from the number one spot in the prestigious world ranking of universities after being overtaken by a rival American institution, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S. is now ranked as the world’s best university, pushing Britain’s historic academic centre into second place. MIT was third on the list last year.
Oxford maintained its position at number five in the table compiled by QS World University Rankings.
University College London climbed from number seven last year to number four in the new rankings, placing it above Oxford University.
Imperial College London is ranked sixth, meaning that for the first time four of the top six universities in the world are British. Britain has a total of 18 universities in the top 100 – one fewer than in 2011.
The rest of the top ten are all in the U.S.

Bankers Committee Endorses N5000 Note
The bankers committee on Tuesday endorsed the plan by the central bank to introduce N5000 note and the coining of lower denominations.
Addressing journalists after the committees meeting in Abuja, the Managing Director of the United Bank for Africa, Philip Oduoza said that the move by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will not in any way affect the nation’s economy as currently speculated.
“If it will take you 100 pieces to fit into an ATM for a N100, it will take far lesser than that if you are feeding the N5000 notes into the machine. If you are moving cash as banks normally do between various locations, you’ll find out that you’ll do less number of runs,” Mr Oduoza said.

Redeem Christian Church Pastor Sets Self Ablaze For Impregnating Choir Member
According to report, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of
God, RCCG, in the Enerhen area of Delta State, recently set himself
ablaze to escape the shame of his illicit affair.
It was gathered that
the decision of the Pastor, simply identified as Pastor Celestine, to
take his life was because he allegedly impregnated a choir in his parish
whose name is given as Rose.
It was learnt that he pleaded with Rose to abort the pregnancy which
she refused blatantly as she did not want to lose her life during the
abortion. He gave her a cheque for N2,000,000, which she refused, even
after explaining to her that her refusal to abort the pregnancy may lead
to the fall of the parish.
After all efforts to get Rose to abort the pregnancy failed, he
reportedly drove himself to Udu bridge under which he lit himself and
was burnt to death. He was married and had a 2 month old baby from his
wife of two years.

A Baghdad court sentenced Iraq’s fugitive Sunni vice president(Tariq al-Hashemi ) to
death Sunday after finding him guilty of masterminding the killings of a
lawyer and a government security official.
Tariq al-Hashemi has denied the allegations. He fled the country
after Iraq’s Shiite-led government leveled the terror charges against
him in December.

Popular Fuji musician, Mr Bayo Akanni aka Ojuyobo is dead. He died after a long battle with a heart related illness.
The heart-related battle had reportedly taken him off music scene for the past three years.
He died on Sunday, 9th of Sept, 2012 at the age of 45.
He had been bedridden for a while and complained of dizziness before being rushed to the hospital.
He died at LUTH (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital) in Ikeja, Lagos State Nigeria.
He was scheduled to be buried today at his house in Mowe, Ibafo area of Lagos.
He is survived by his three little children.

Man Seeks Divorce Over Wife’s Attempt To Poison Him
A 48-year-old welder, Mr Musbau Akinade, on Monday urged an Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his marriage because of his wife's alleged attempt to poison him.
"My wife poisoned me sometime ago,'' Akinade, who resides on the Oriwu Road, Ikorodu, Lagos, said during a hearing in a divorce suit he filed.
The plaintiff also alleged that his wife of 19 years, Ashiata, 38, seized all his property documents.
"She took those documents because she thought I was going to die. Please separate us; I am fed up with the marriage,'' he said.
However, in her response, Ashiata, mother of five, denied the allegations. "I want this court to help me. I still want to be his wife,'' she submitted.
The Court President, Alhaja Risikat Ekerin, adjourned the case till Sept. 24 for further hearing.

London Paralympics 2012: Nigeria Finished With 13 Medals
As the 2012 Paralympic Games rounded off in London on Sunday, the Nigerian athletes to the Paralympics made the nation proud with a fine display at the games which earned them 13 medals over all, Nigeria finished with six gold, five silver and two bronze.

Nigerian University Claims Discovery of Cancer Cure
African University of Science and Technology has discovered a new drug and method for the treatment of cancer, an official said.
The President and Provost of the university, Prof. Wole Soboyejo, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.
Soboyejo said the feat was achieved in the course of the ongoing research into cancer treatment.
He said that the results of the research were already showing reasonable conclusions of a nanotechnology-based cancer treatment.
Al Qaeda, Second in Command in the Arab Peninsula Killed
An official military website has revealed that the second in command of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), Said al-Shihri has been killed on Monday in an operation in Hadramawt Valley by Yemeni forces.
The news has also been confirmed by Yemeni Defense Ministry.
According to a Yemeni government official who spoke to the CNN on condition of anonymity, an operation took place and a body appears to be that of al-Shihri, but officials are waiting for DNA confirmation. However, military statement said al-Shihri was killed along with “six other terrorists who were with him.”

Lagos State Government To Introduce Chinese Language in Public Schools
Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, said on Monday that the state government would introduce Mandarin, or Chinese language, in public schools' curriculum as from next session.

Female Student Shot To Death For Fighting Off Armed Robbers Who Tried To Rape Her
The escalating incidence of students shot dead by dare devil men of the underworld is frightening to say the least.
And this is happening as government is busy fighting Boko Haram on all fronts while other evil vices seem to have taken over- as armed robbers, cultists, rapists and ritualists are having a field day unperturbed.
According to popular blogger Linda Ikeji, classmates and friends of the slain student sent the story to her. The student, Wunmi Adebayo, was shot at point blank last night when she went to visit a friend of hers in his house at Golden Estate in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state.
The 200 level student was visiting the said friend when they were suddenly attacked by armed robbers who robbed them of their possessions and later shot Wunmi in the face because she fought them off as they attempted to rape her.
Her corpse has been deposited at the mortuary. Wunmi was the first child of her parents and friends say she was very jovial, friendly and kind hearted. Her candlelight procession will hold tomorrow at skyfield in Lagos.
