Lokoja Residents Move As River Niger Overflows Bank

                           
Some houses along the bank of River Niger in Lokoja, Kogi State, have been flooded following excess discharge of water from the river between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who, on Thursday, visited some of the affected houses at Kpata, Adankolo and Gadumo areas of Lokoja, reports that no life was lost to the flooding.

NAN, however, learnt that property worth several millions of Naira were submerged by the flood.

Some affected residents said they woke up to discover that their houses had been flooded, a development which they attributed to excess discharge of water from the River Niger.

Man Kills His Cousin With A Machete in Bayelsa forest

                               

Peace and tranquility yesterday eluded Azikoro community, a suburb in the outskirt of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, when a young man allegedly killed his cousin with a machete in a forest.

It was learnt that the inhumane act occurred in the forest between Azikoro and Agbura communities.

Although the indigenes are yet to confirm the motive behind the gruesome killing of Diedem Otegbe by his cousin Richman Osain, the culprit is presently cooling his feet in police custody.

It was revealed that Richman dealt a fatal machete blow on Diedem, which led to his premature death.

Reliable sources from the area squealed that until the sad incident, the duo who went to the forest were best of friends and living in the same house.

Trouble started when some of the natives returning from their farmland noticed the bleeding body of young Diedem abandoned in the bush. They raised alarm, alerted the police; subsequently Richman was arrested as the prime suspect.

The State’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Fidelis Odunna (DSP) confirmed the incident.

A faithful dog has refused to leave the side of his dead master's grave for six years, it was reported today.

The loyal dog, Capitan, ran away from home after the death of Argentinian  Miguel Guzman  in 2006.

A week later Mr Guzman's family went to pay their respects and found the heartbroken pet sitting by his owner's grave, wailing.

Since then the grieving dog has rarely left the spot at the cemetery in the town of Villa Carlos Paz, central Argentina.

Mr Guzman bought Capitan as a present for his 13-year-old son Damian in 2005.

He died suddenly in March the next year, but by the time his family had returned home from the funeral Capitan was gone.

World's Smallest Bodybuilder Dies at 23 Years

The world's tiniest bodybuilder, Aditya 'Romeo' Dev, is dead. He died today at age 23.

Early this morning, Dev was rushed to Satyam hosptal in Punjab India, where doctors were unable to revive him.

"He was brought to the hospital in an  unconscious state," Dr. Nerraj Chandanone at Satyam Hospital told The Daily Mail. "It was due to massive bleeding which had caused brain damage or aneurism bleeding. There were very rare chances of him surviving."

In 2008, Dev had been diagnosed with two brain aneurisms, a common symptom of being a dwarf. Doctors had warned Dev that at any time, without warning, his aneurism could burst and lead to a fatal stroke.

Dev's father, Anil Dev Sharma, 53, and mother, Rakesh Bala, 49, are devastated at the news of their son's death.

A 58-year old woman, Josephine Jacob, has been arrested and charged to a Lagos court for allegedly strangling her friend, Mrs. Margret Ndidi, 59, in their home at Shasha, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

This happened 16 years after Josephine’s bitter experience of losing a lover to Margret whom he married. Josephine reportedly went inside Margret’s one room apartment at 19, Omo Olore Street, Mosalashi Bus Stop, Shasha, when she was sleeping and strangled her.

Ten Teenage Girls Drown in a Boat Mishap on Their Way to a Wedding in Taraba

                             

As the floods that have been predicted in strategic parts continue, at least ten teenage girls have lost their lives when their canoe capsized on their way to a wedding in Taraba one of the regions hit by the predicted flooding.

According to the head of the Red Cross in Taraba State, Manja Agwe Mathew, on Wednesday, three others who were in the canoe that capsized on the Karim River are still missing: “The bodies of 10 passengers in the canoe were recovered by local fishermen while search for the remaining three is still on,” he said.

MIT Overtakes Cambridge To Become Number One In World University Rankings

      
Cambridge has slipped from the number one spot in the prestigious world ranking of universities after being overtaken by a rival American institution, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S. is now ranked as the world’s best university, pushing Britain’s historic academic centre into second place. MIT was third on the list last year.

Oxford maintained its position at number five in the table compiled by QS World University Rankings.

University College London climbed from number seven last year to number four in the new rankings, placing it above Oxford University.

Imperial College London is ranked sixth, meaning that for the first time four of the top six universities in the world are British. Britain has a total of 18 universities in the top 100 – one fewer than in 2011.

The rest of the top ten are all in the U.S.

Bankers Committee Endorses N5000 Note

                         
The bankers committee on Tuesday endorsed the plan by the central bank to introduce N5000 note and the coining of lower denominations.

Addressing journalists after the committees meeting in Abuja, the Managing Director of the United Bank for Africa, Philip Oduoza said that the move by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will not in any way affect the nation’s economy as currently speculated.

“If it will take you 100 pieces to fit into an ATM for a N100, it will take far lesser than that if you are feeding the N5000 notes into the machine. If you are moving cash as banks normally do between various locations, you’ll find out that you’ll do less number of runs,” Mr Oduoza said.

Redeem Christian Church Pastor Sets Self Ablaze For Impregnating Choir Member

                                     

According to report, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in the Enerhen area of Delta State, recently set himself ablaze to escape the shame of his illicit affair.

It was gathered that the decision of the Pastor, simply identified as Pastor Celestine, to take his life was because he allegedly impregnated a choir in his parish whose name is given as Rose.

It was learnt that he pleaded with Rose to abort the pregnancy which she refused blatantly as she did not want to lose her life during the abortion. He gave her a cheque for N2,000,000, which she refused, even after explaining to her that her refusal to abort the pregnancy may lead to the fall of the parish.

After all efforts to get Rose to abort the pregnancy failed, he reportedly drove himself to Udu bridge under which he lit himself and was burnt to death. He was married and had a 2 month old baby from his wife of two years.

 

Iraqi Vice President ‘Tariq al-Hashemi’ Sentenced To Death by Hanging

 A Baghdad court sentenced Iraq’s fugitive Sunni vice president(Tariq al-Hashemi )  to death Sunday after finding him guilty of masterminding the killings of a lawyer and a government security official.

Tariq al-Hashemi has denied the allegations. He fled the country after Iraq’s Shiite-led government leveled the terror charges against him in December.

The politically charged case sparked a crisis in Iraq’s government and has fueled Sunni Muslim and Kurdish resentment against Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite who critics say is monopolizing power.

Globacom Manager ‘Tayo Smith’ Commits Suicide Due To Frustration in Ibadan

                              

I don’t know what could possibly push a married man with children to commit suicide and blame it on his boss, but judging from the suicide note this Glo Area Marketing Manager left, that seemed to have been the case.

One of the Area Marketing Managers of Globacom Nigeria, Tayo Smith committed suicide last Saturday, leaving a note in which he apologized to his wife and children.
 

It is also being speculated that the deceased blamed his action on his boss who he claimed was frustrating him.
