 A Professor of Nigerian descent, Ilesanmi Adesida made history last month by becoming the first black Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the well-respected University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in the United States.

A native of Ifon in Ondo State, Prof. Adesida, 63, is a Nigerian engineer whose outstanding works in the field of Nanotechnology with special emphasis on high speed devices used in communication, has received accolades in the scientific community.

CBN Plans To Introduce Coins-Dispensing ATMs for Nigerians


As some Nigerians have advised that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should encourage Nigerians to spend coins, the apex bank has said that it will facilitate the introduction of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) that can dispense coins to encourage Nigerians imbibe the culture of spending them.
It will be recalled that about two weeks ago, the president and chairman of Council, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, Chief Lugard Aimiuwu had told the CBN that it should encourage the citizens of the country to spend coins.

The Dean of Faculty of Arts at the University of Ibadan, Professor Kolawole Olu-Owolabi aged 51 today slumped and died at Mokola Roundabout Ibadan.His body has been deposited in the mortuary.

The death of Professor Olu-Owolabi will be the third in two years in the same Faculty. In Nigeria’s premier university, founded in 1948.

Nigerian soldiers on Monday said they had shot dead a man suspected to have acted as a spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram and arrested two other high-ranking members, a military official said.

“We carried out an operation early this morning in which we killed a media man of Boko Haram terrorists and arrested two field commanders of the sect,” said Lieutenant Iweha Ikedichi, spokesman for a military task force, adding he did not have their exact identities.

Students Protest Sexual Harassment and Extortion by Lecturers

About 2,000 students of Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH,  took to the street in protest against what they called sexual harassment of female students, molestation and extortion by some staff of the institution.

The angry students blocked traffic at Eleven-Eleven Bus Stop on their way to the Government House, Calabar to register their grievance.

Some of the placards carried by the students had inscriptions such as, ‘Sexual harassment of female students’, Female molestation’, ‘Extortion of money from students’, ‘No better CRUTECH, No better Cross River’, ‘CRUTECH, no better lecture hall’.

Lagos Government Shuts Down 15 Illegal Hospitals

The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency has shut down over 15 illegal health facilities in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said investigation and inspection carried out by the agency showed that these health facilities had violated some pro- visions under the States Health Sector Reform Law of 2006.

Idris stated that the health facilities were found guilty of offences including use of poor facilities, unqualified personnel and non-registration of facilities with appropriate agencies.

Leading opposition party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has described First Lady, Dame patience Jonathan’s ‘disappearance’ from the public scene as a national shame.
The party on Sunday called on the Presidency to tell the entire nation of the First lady’s whereabouts and her current health status.
According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigerians had the right to know the whereabouts of the President’s wife who is also a serving secretary in Bayelsa State.

TRAGEDY: Boko Haram Wipes Out An Entire Family in kano

Four men suspected to be agents of the Boko Haram sect have shot dead a member of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and three members of his family in Kano.
They killed the officer, his wife, his three year old daughter and his crippled brother staying with him, police sources told a news agency today.
The victims were all locked up in a room and shot dead in the home of the yet to be identified NSCDC officer in Hotoron Gabas district.
Neighbours said they saw the four men arriving on two motor cycles and entering the house.
After the killing, they jumped back on their bikes and sped off.
Kano, since the 20 January multiple attacks by the Boko Haram sect, has been experiencing isolated attacks by militants of the sect, such as throwing bombs at police patrol vehicles or check points or killing people at their homes or on the street. In June, an SSS officer was shot dead by the sect in his house.

Goodluck Jonathan Splashes Millions Plus National Honours on Nigeria’s Paralympians and Falconets

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday night brought bright smiles on the faces of Nigerian sportsmen as he hosted the victorious Nigerian Reps to the 2012 London Paralympic Games at the presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja. 

During the event, the president announced a cash prize award of N5 million, N3million and N2 million to each of Nigeria's Paralympic Gold, Silver and Bronze winners respectively. 

He also announced the conferment of the national honor of Member of the Order of The Niger, MON, on the six gold medal winning Paralympians.

“You represented our country to the best of your ability, we thank you,” Jonathan told the Paralympians and footballers at a reception hosted for the two contingents.

Woman Sets 85-Year-Old Step Mother on Fire In Imo State


A woman threw caution to the winds in Imo State as she set her 85-year-old stepmother ablaze, after splashing her two grandchildren with hot water. 
The natives of Ndiokwu Lorji, Aboh Mbaise area of the state, would not forget the fateful day in a hurry as the devil, metaphorically, took control of one of them and she caused tragedy within her own family.
People wept uncontrollably at the sight of the old woman and the two kids who were writhing in pains following the alleged action of the suspect. Gladys, 48, mother of many children, was said to have splashed hot water on Emeka Ukaegbu, 4, and Nzube Ukaegbu, 6.
It was gathered that the children were viewing a film in the family parlour when Gladys appeared with the hot water and before anybody knew what she was up to, she had poured the hot water on the two kids. Their uncle, Chukwuma Ukaegbu, 32, said in Lagos that the kids screamed as they were running out from the parlour in agony.

Gay Prophet Fights Catholic Church In Enugu

After much inquires, he confirmed that the catechist of St. Dominic’s Catholic church, Mr. Joseph Ugwu, acting on instructions by the parish priest Rev. Fr. Patrick Ujah, had passed a strict warning to the congregation to desist from visiting his prayer house or bear the consequences.

Popular blogger, Linda Ikeji reported a man who was caught at Tipper garage near Gwarimpa in Abuja yesterday with a dead baby stuffed in a suitcase. They said he was arrested on a tip off. 

But another source said that the conductor of the bus he entered asked him to bring his suitcase so it can be stored properly and the man vehemently refused. The suspicious conductor asked him what was inside the suitcase and he refused to say. As the man tried to leave the bus, the conductor and others seized the suitcase from him and found the dead boy inside.

Google REJECTS America's Request To Remove Anti-Islam Video That Sparked World-Wide Protests

As anti-American riots spread across the globe, Google has rejected the White House’s request to remove a controversial anti-Islam YouTube clip that sparked the violent protests. 

The internet company, who own YouTube, said it was censoring the video in India and Indonesia after blocking it on Wednesday in Egypt and Libya, where U.S. embassies have been stormed by protestors enraged over the depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as a fraud and philanderer.

But, despite mounting political pressure, Google are currently refusing to fully take down the clip.

Male Doctor Arrested For Raping Another Man


A 25-year-old South African doctor has been arrested for rape in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday night.

He invited a 21-year-old man out for drinks on Wednesday, got him drunk and later raped him at his Macfarlane Street home, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

SowetanLive learnt that the victim woke up later in the night to find the doctor raping him.

He left the premises and reported it to police.

The doctor was arrested, and is due to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

South African Police Fire Shoots At the Mine Worker


South African police fired rubber bullets and tear gas Saturday to disperse workers at platinum giant Lonmin’s strike-hit Marikana mine in a crackdown on rising unrest in the key industry.

An AFP photographer on the scene said rubber bullets were used after hundreds of workers regrouped in a shantytown near where police shot dead 34 people last month.

Protesters threw stones at officers and set tyres alight. One man was bleeding after being shot in the arm and the side of his body.

Former Minister Arrested For Oil Theft


A former Minister Of Interior ,Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho has reportedly been arrested in Lagos.He was picked up in connection with alleged oil theft.Investigations into a company linked to him led to his arrest.

The ex minister is believed to have been handed over to the State Security Service,SSS as investigations continue into the affair. Iheanacho had a controversial tenure as a minister as he was suspended only to be reinstated and later laid off.

Twist in Davido-Taxi Driver Case

On Aug. 12, 2012, CRIME DIGEST reported that popular singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido, allegedly assaulted a taxi driver in Lagos and that his publicist, Valerie Obaeze, claimed via an e-mail that the singer knew nothing about the incident.

In a related development, Hashiru Azeez, the employer of the taxi driver, whose name is Femi Ajibola, told CRIME DIGEST that Davido himself said that the taxi driver was assaulted by his cousins.
Azeez confirmed that he gave a Toyota Corolla to Ajibola on hire purchase.

“You Cannot Islamise Nigeria,” Obasanjo Tells Boko Haram


Barely two days after the Borno State Governor sounded a similar warning, former president, Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday, told members of the Boko Haram and their sponsors that they should have a rethink if they believed that they could win their current war against the Nigerian state.

The elder statesman had been responding to questions on “News Day” on the British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC] when he sounded the note of warning. Describing such mission as an unattainable objective, he said they would soon realise that they were engaging in a futile exercise; particularly pointing out that they were naive to think that they could turn the into country to an Islamic state.
