Nigerian Professor Makes History: Becomes The First Black Provost/VC Of University Of Illinois

 A Professor of Nigerian descent, Ilesanmi Adesida made history last month by becoming the first black Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the well-respected University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in the United States.

A native of Ifon in Ondo State, Prof. Adesida, 63, is a Nigerian engineer whose outstanding works in the field of Nanotechnology with special emphasis on high speed devices used in communication, has received accolades in the scientific community.

Therefore, it was with shock and disbelief on Friday, September 7 at Iyaganku Police Division when onlookers witnessed an eight-year-old girl, Ewaoluwa (surname withheld), been brought to the station for changing the looks of her mother’s housemaid when she allegedly bathed the Togolese girl with hot water for not responding to her call that she needed to eat Indomie on time.

CBN Plans To Introduce Coins-Dispensing ATMs for Nigerians


As some Nigerians have advised that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should encourage Nigerians to spend coins, the apex bank has said that it will facilitate the introduction of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) that can dispense coins to encourage Nigerians imbibe the culture of spending them.
It will be recalled that about two weeks ago, the president and chairman of Council, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, Chief Lugard Aimiuwu had told the CBN that it should encourage the citizens of the country to spend coins.

University Of Ibadan’s Dean Of Arts Faculty Slumps And Dies In Market

The Dean of Faculty of Arts at the University of Ibadan, Professor Kolawole Olu-Owolabi aged 51 today slumped and died at Mokola Roundabout Ibadan.His body has been deposited in the mortuary.

The death of Professor Olu-Owolabi will be the third in two years in the same Faculty. In Nigeria’s premier university, founded in 1948.

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested a 27 years old woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death in the Azikoro suburb of Yenagoa the state capital.

The woman identified as Osas Omoregie according to eyewitnesses stabbed her spouse, Chukwuma Iwu over alleged marital squabbles.

Nigerian soldiers on Monday said they had shot dead a man suspected to have acted as a spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram and arrested two other high-ranking members, a military official said.

“We carried out an operation early this morning in which we killed a media man of Boko Haram terrorists and arrested two field commanders of the sect,” said Lieutenant Iweha Ikedichi, spokesman for a military task force, adding he did not have their exact identities.

Students Protest Sexual Harassment and Extortion by Lecturers

About 2,000 students of Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH,  took to the street in protest against what they called sexual harassment of female students, molestation and extortion by some staff of the institution.

The angry students blocked traffic at Eleven-Eleven Bus Stop on their way to the Government House, Calabar to register their grievance.

Some of the placards carried by the students had inscriptions such as, ‘Sexual harassment of female students’, Female molestation’, ‘Extortion of money from students’, ‘No better CRUTECH, No better Cross River’, ‘CRUTECH, no better lecture hall’.

Lagos Government Shuts Down 15 Illegal Hospitals

The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency has shut down over 15 illegal health facilities in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said investigation and inspection carried out by the agency showed that these health facilities had violated some pro- visions under the States Health Sector Reform Law of 2006.

Idris stated that the health facilities were found guilty of offences including use of poor facilities, unqualified personnel and non-registration of facilities with appropriate agencies.

Leading opposition party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has described First Lady, Dame patience Jonathan’s ‘disappearance’ from the public scene as a national shame.
The party on Sunday called on the Presidency to tell the entire nation of the First lady’s whereabouts and her current health status.
According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigerians had the right to know the whereabouts of the President’s wife who is also a serving secretary in Bayelsa State.
Mohammed said, “She is the First Lady and as such there are certain duties she performs. Her wellbeing, to a large extent, is also the wellbeing of the nation, especially these days when the office is not just a glamour office; it packs a lot of power and influence.
