Social media company Facebook Inc
reported on Thursday it reached the 1 billion user mark last month, while Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said it would keep pursuing growth through mobile devices.
The No. 1 social network has faced a rough road since its May initial public offering. Investors and analysts have fretted over a sharp slowdown in revenue growth and questioned how Facebook will make money from users as people access its site on mobile devices.
Facebook shares have lost more than 40 percent of their value since the stock debuted at $38.
Facebook, based in Menlo Park, California, hit the 1 billion milestone on September 14 at 12:45 p.m. Pacific time, the company said on its website. This is up by 45 million users since June.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday approved the appointment of new service chiefs for the Armed Forces.
According to a statement signed by the president’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr Reuben Abati, the newly appointed chiefs include the Vice Admiral O.S. Ibrahim (Kwara) for Chief of Defence Staff; Rear Admiral D.J. Ezeoba (Delta) as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshall A.S. Badeh (Adamawa) as Chief of Air Staff.
The incumbent Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. O.A. Ihejirika (Abia) retained his position.
President Jonathan thanked the outgoing service chiefs for their meritorious and commendable service to the nation and wishes them well in their future endeavours.

Barely twenty-four hours after fresh rumours hit the media about the state of health of the First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, claiming the she is suffering from uterine cancer, the Vanguard is categorically claiming that the First Lady has been discharged from the Horst Schmidt Klinik in Wiesbaden, Germany, where it was believed that she had been for about a month.
The newspaper, however, is still unable to disclose the nature of the ailment for which she had been receiving treatment. However, according to the Vanguard, she reportedly left the hospital two days ago. They also claimed that doctors at the Horst Schmidt Klinik in Wiesbaden last week were reported to have told the media they had been in touch with Nigerian officials on Patience’s condition.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has sentenced one Asaba-based pastor identified as Joshua Egwu to 5 years in prison after he was convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy and advance fee fraud (419) for obtaining the sum of N700,000 from one Benedict Obidinma under false pretense.
The cleric was sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour; he was sentenced to three years on the first count and two years on the second count. Both sentences are to run concurrently. The Chief Magistrate S. Ehikwe also sentenced his accomplice, one Ekene Ilona, to the same five years imprisonment, for luring the victim, who was a bosom friend to him.

At least four Nigerian peacekeepers have been killed when ambush was laid on a patrol van of the UN-African Union Mission (UNAMID) in Sudan’s western Darfur region on Tuesday. The incident left at least eight other peacekeepers injured.

A lone bomber has hit a brothel-Cosmopolitan Hotel-on Uche Road, Sabo Gari area in Zaria, we have gathered. The bomber escaped soon after attacking the motel.
Sources inform us that Nigerian troops have been deployed to the scene in search of the escaped suspect.
As at the time of reporting this story, it was unclear if anyone was killed or injured in the attack. The bombing took place over an hour ago.
This latest bomb attack is coming less than a week after an Islamic school in the Tukur Tukur area of Zaria was attacked by unidentified gun men.
