Armstrong Stripped of His Seven Tour de France Titles, Banned For Life

Disgraced Lance Armstrong’s fate was sealed on Monday, as cycling’s under-fire world governing body decided to back a life ban for doping and strip him of his record seven Tour de France titles.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) said it supported a decision by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to erase the Texan’s career and his place in the sport’s history.

“We will not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and we will recognise the sanction that USADA has imposed,” UCI president Pat McQuaid told a news conference in Geneva.

The State Security Service has summoned a serving Senator, Ahmed Zanna, over his alleged involvement with the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The summons is in connection with the arrest last week of a suspected member of the group, Shuaibu Bama, in a house believed to be the senator’s.

The Joint Task Force had arrested Bama in the building along Damboa Road in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, last Friday after soldiers stormed the House.

The police yesterday successfully detonated a bomb and many improvised explosive devices planted at Gombe State University (GSU).

A witness who spoke to newsmen said the bomb was concealed in a polythene bag and was planted between a faculty block and the administrative building of the university. The explosive devices were found hidden in various locations.

Gunmen last night bombed a patrol van of the Joint Task Force (JTF) at Yindiski Ward, along Gashua road in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.

After months of intense politicking and anxiety, the Ondo State governorship election ended yesterday with Governor Segun Mimiko of the Labour Party emerging victorious.

The announcement of the results by the Independent National Electoral Commission began at 2:55am today and ended at 4:30am when the process was discontinued. One of the INEC officials told the gathering of electoral officials, party agents and security agents that more declaration of the results would resume at 10am.

As of the time the announcement was stopped, the results from 15 Local Government Areas had been announced. The results clearly showed that Mimiko’s victory at the poll was all but assured.

Fresh killings at UNIPORT’s host community

Barely two weeks after four undergraduates of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) were murdered at Omuokiri-Aluu, three persons including another student of the institution have been shot dead at Choba, one of the university’s host communities.

Also killed in the Thursday night incident were the student’s girlfriend and a young man who had just completed his national service in Port Harcourt.

There is uneasy calm in UNIPORT’s host communities, especially Omuokiri-Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, over threats of reprisals by kinsmen of the four students who were lynched on October 5.

Agents of some political parties are allegedly bribing voters with money, textile fabrics, kerosene, buckets and other gifts.
Witnesses at different polling units alleged on Twitter that the party agents are trying to use the gifts to entice voters to support their candidates.

Writing under the Twitter handle, @solar_unique, a witness said in a report to the Independent National Electoral Commission that a Labour Party agent “called Mandela is currently distributing N100 notes at Ward 3, All Saints Grammar School, Ondo West Local Government Area.”

Nigerian Military Authorities has announced the arrest of a A high-profile member of the Boko Haram sect in the home of a senator in Maiduguri, Borno state.

“A high-profile Boko Haram commander, one Shuaibu Mohammed Bama, who has been on the list of wanted terrorists … was arrested by task force troops in a serving senator’s house …,” the statement said of the arrest on Thursday.

Two Nigerian men, suspected of being part of a drug smuggling ring, were arrested, yesterday, with 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ‘ice,’ valued at an estimated Bt1 million (about $33,300) in eastern Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng area, according to narcotics suppression police.

Identified as Ahamefule Cosmos and Iriegbe Chinonso, the two Nigerian nationals were detained at a convenience store near Ramkhamhaeng Soi 24.

Woman Seeks Divorce Over Husband’s Drinking Habit

Mrs Olusupo Osho, a 30-year-old clerk, on Friday asked an Ikorodu Customary Court, Lagos, to dissolve her 13-year-old marriage over her husband’s alleged drinking habit.

“My husband drinks alcohol to the extent that he falls into gutters. He uses all his money to drink and he does not take care of me and my children; any time he drinks and I make a little mistake, he would beat me to a state of coma,’’ she told the court.

The petitioner, who resides at 6, Allison St, Ikorodu, Lagos State, said that her husband’s drinking habit made him to lose customers in his fashion designing business.

I have restrained myself for a couple of years from commenting on Tonto Dike’s career after my last comments about her role in the movie she acted in two years back, were badly taken by her and she went on twitter to hurl infantile insults on my person with expletives and uncomplimentary remarks. My reaction to such then was just a dignified silence.

After all, I had already spoken on her stunted talent as an up and coming actress and further comments on her incensed tweets were unnecessary.

Contrary to speculations that veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa’s health may have worsened due to the silence from his end, the actor has said that he is well.

“I’m getting better,” he said.

Enebeli spoke from his hospital bed in India where he is currently receiving treatment for his ailment. The actor’s career has been on hold since he went down with stroke last year. He was at a point taken to his home town, Utagba Uno in Delta State.

Nobel laureate, Professor Wale Soyinka has described the brutal murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt as the height of man inhumanity to man.
