Lack of authorised stamp on the Director of Public Prosecutions letter of advice on the trial of the seven men accused of killing Cynthia Osokogu, stalled hearing on Monday.

The first wrong signal for the trial was that Magistrate Olalekan Aka-Bashorun of a Yaba Magistrate’s Court was absent when the case came up. But an attempt by another magistrate to hear the matter was futile as it was alleged that the DPP’s letter of advice, which had been lodged with the court was not stamped.

According to the guy who sent in the report and photos, the young man you see above was allegedly shot in the chest at 10:52 this morning around Ilupeju Byepass in Ilupeju by policemen from the Ilupeju Police Station who were chasing him and trying to seize his Okada.

The Okada guy was trying to escape arrest when one of the policemen chasing him shot him in the chest. After the shooting, the policemen entered their van and sped off. Passersby then rushed the young man to Teju Hospital which is just adjacent to the where the incident happened.

The South African Reserve Bank on Tuesday rolled out new bank notes bearing the face of the country’s first black president Nelson Mandela, the latest monument to the 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon.

Youths Chase Away Born Again Monarch for Shunning Traditional Festival

                                       

There was pandemonium at Ogbagi-Akoko, in the Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State last Friday when youths of the town chased away their monarch, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Adetona, from the palace for his refusal to approve the yearly celebration of the Ogun festival.

Our correspondent learnt that the monarch, narrowly escaped being lynched when the youth, armed with dangerous items, besieged the palace.

The youth, it was learnt, damaged vehicles and decorations in the palace said to be worth millions of naira.

Some of the youth, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent on Monday that Adetona had been disrespecting the town’s traditions since he was installed as the monarch.

Contrary to the ongoing rumours that Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi is planning to contest the 2015 presidency, the jet-crazed Governor has debunked the hearsay, asserting that he’s not nursing any presidential ambition for now.

Amaechi told newsmen during an interactive session in Port Harcourt on Monday that his interest is to see the state move to a greater height.

He asserted that he’s not aware of his posters and those of his Jigawa State counterpart pasted in some parts of the Northern states.

Governor Ajimobi Sacks Three commissioners, Swaps Six, One Week after Wife's Arrest

                             

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi in a major shake-up on Monday dropped three commissioners from the state executive council.

Six other commissioners were posted from their previous ministries and assigned new portfolio.

The reorganisation is coming exactly a week after the governor’s wife was allegedly rumoured to had been arrested in the United Kingdom for money laundering.

In a media briefing after the state executive council meeting, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Waheed Akin Olajide, announced the cabinet change, adding that the reshuffle was aimed at improving efficiency in the Ajimobi administration.

He said, “They (commissioners dropped) have not committed any offence. It is just to increase the tempo of governance in some key areas, so as to achieve the agenda we have set for ourselves within the time available.”

While administering the oath of office on the 11 appointed Justices, the Chief Justice urges them to be honest and truthful in order to enhance the existing dignity of the judiciary in the country.

Rev. King Appeals Death Sentence Five Years After

                              

Convicted General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly,Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Rev. King, yesterday pleaded with the Court of Appeal, Lagos to quash the death sentence passed on him by Justice Joseph Oyewole of an Ikeja High Court, five years ago.

Ezeugo was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging on January 11, 2007 , for the alleged murder of a church member, Ann Uzoh. He was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder.

At the hearing of his appeal, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, who handled his brief, while adopting his written address as well as his reply brief, urged the court to set aside the judgment of the trial court.

Lagos State government, represented by Solicitor-General, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, as respondent also adopted its written address.

The state, however, urged the court to uphold Justice Oyewole’s verdict. “We urge your Lordships to dismiss this appeal,” Pedro said.

Biafra Mass Protest: Atleast 100 People Arrested and Charged With Treason

                        

At least 100 people have been charged with treason in south-eastern Nigeria after a march supporting independence for Biafra, their lawyer says.

Members of the Biafran Zionist Movement declared independence, raised the Biafran flag and then marched through the region's main town, Enugu.

More than one million people died during the 1967-70 Biafran conflict - mostly from hunger and disease.

Most of those arrested were young men but some were veterans of the war.

They were all remanded in custody.

The BZM first gathered on Sunday to mark the birthday of former Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, who died in November 2011 and was buried in March.

Osaze Makes U-Turn: Ready To Play For Nigeria



Stephen Keshi has set the records straight, over the reports over the weekend that West Brom’s forward, Osaze Odemwingie, has retired from international football.

The Super Eagles manager, in a release by Ben Alaiya on Monday, said the interview he granted Supersports, were actually about the frustrations the former Bendel Insurance player had faced under previous coaches of the national team.

“What [Odemwingie] told me was that after fighting so hard to qualify Nigeria for the South Africa 2010 World Cup, he was dumped on the bench when the tournament proper started and that he fears a repeat following the manner he was substituted in the [2013 Africa Cup of Nations] qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali [in February], which was under me,” Keshi is quoted to have said.

“Well, I told him that if I had my way all the players who featured in that match should have been substituted but I had only three substitutions to make because we played poorly in the encounter.

“He told me he understands my position and that he is now ready to return to the national team fold. We actually spoke for over one hour on Sunday [November 4], so there is actually nothing amiss about [him]. He has said he will join others to come and fight for a shirt and that is the new rule in the national team.”

TRAGEDY: 20 People Die Scooping Fuel From Fallen Tanker (WARNING: Graphic Images)



      

Tragedy struck at the weekend at Umuokpo in Amairinabuo Community of Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State when a fuel tanker exploded, killing several people and injuring others.

Unconfirmed report had it that over 20 people, who rushed to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker, were burnt to death, while others, including 10 persons, said to be on danger list in a mission hospital in the area, sustained various degrees of burns.

However, another source said only three persons had been confirmed dead.

Maker of ‘My Pikin’ teething mixture, Kola Gbadegbesin Okunlola, is dead.

He had been standing trial alongside his company, Barewa Pharmaceutical Limited, and two staff of the company, Adeyemo Abiodun and Egbele Austin Eromosele.
Okunlola died on 27 October, 2012, aged 58 years.

Sources said Okunlola died at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, where he was admitted when he suffered haemorrhage stroke.

The Federal Government, weekend, was advised to quickly tackle the rising rate of unemployment in the country as its rate was estimated to be around 40 per cent of the entire population.

The immediate past World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, who gave the advice also said: “I am one of those Nigerians who are praying for Nigeria oil to dry up so that our government can quickly take immediate actions towards diversifying the nation’s source of revenue.

Alternative to oil should emerge immediately to cure the oil politics in our nation.”

20 Members of Jehovah’s Witness Church Dead, Most Injured in Road Accident

                            
It was indeed a black Saturday in Akwa Ibom State, as a man, his whole family were among more than 20 members of the Jehovah’s Witness Church that got perished in a fatal road accident along the Utu Etim Ekpo road, in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of the state.

The tragic incident which occurred on their way to the Church’s annual convention  in Ikot Ekpene Local Government area of the state also left 40 other members of the church severely injured.

It was gathered that more than 70 members of the church had hired a Lorry from Ukanafun Local Government Area to Ikot Ekpene for the three-day annual district convention on Friday, but on their way, tragedy struck, leaving many members of the church dead.

The corpses and those injured in the accident were said to have been taken to nearby hospitals and mortuaries.

Five People Killed, Many Injured As Church Building Collapsed In Anambra

        

Five persons were killed and over 100 others including children and a priest injured when a church collapsed in Nnewi, Anambra State yesterday.

The incident occurred during the Sunday service.
The elderly wore sullen faces and the youth shouted on top of their voices amid pandemonium at the Ezinifite community, Nnewi South local government, after the incident. The St. Thomas the Aguiros Catholic Church that gave way was under construction.
Over 2000 worshipers were attending mass when the incident occurred. One of the dead, according to church sources was Mrs Okoye the woman leader of Ezinifite Improvement Union (Women President General).

Mrs Okoye, until her death was the step mother of the main financier of the church building project— Chief Leonard Ike Okoye — an Aba-based business mogul.

CAN to Jonathan: Take Drastic Actions Against Boko Haram

                                
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday advised President Goodluck Jonathan to adopt radical steps to conquer the new method of killing by the Boko Haram sect.

The Federal Government may have commenced considering the criteria for compensating members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, particularly those who had suffered one form of injustice or the other.

Also there were indications on Sunday that the government might be willing to pay compensation to the sect’s members “who were seen to have been killed unjustly.”

Boko Haram Denies Killing General Shuwa

 Boko Haram  has denied that it operatives had a hand in the assassination of General Mamman Shuwa. 

The civil war veteran and former member of the supreme Military Council was killed last week at his Maiduguri residence.

The latest news on General Shuwa’s death shocked many people. Speaking through Abu Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, Boko Haram said that they had no axe to grind with the retired general.The group also warned people from further spreading the rumour that they killed him.

The show has been discovering and grooming acting talent for the African film industry since 2005. It brought notable stars such as Tonto Dikeh, Uti Nwachukwu and Lydia Forson to limelight.
