Nigerian titan, Aliko Dangote, 55, remains Africa’s richest man, according to Africa’s 40 Richest ranking by Forbes. He retains his place at the head of the table, and even increased his net worth to $12 billion from only $10 billion last year.
Three of the newcomers hail from Nigeria while two tycoons are from South Africa, including Koos Bekker, a CEO who earns no salary or bonus. One of the two new Nigerians are: Folorunsho Alakija and Sani Bello.
Sani Bello of Nigeria has a fortune estimated at $425 million built on oil and telecom. His AMNI Petroleum has stakes in offshore Nigerian oilfields. He also owns a slice of MTN Nigeria, an arm of South Africa based mobile phone network MTN Group.
For the first time, two women have been ranked in Forbes annual list of Africa’s 40 richest individuals.
Nigeria’s Folorunsho Alakija of Nigeria, who holds a significant stake in the copious Agbami oil field, and Isabel dos Santos, the entrepreneur daughter of Angola’s long-serving President, took their seats on the continent’s high table, which was this year worth an estimated $72.9 billion.
