Katsina State Governor: Ibrahim Shema

The Katsina State Government has announced 100 per cent salary increase for chief executives of government’s agencies and boards.

Alhaji Lawal Jari, the state Commissioner for Finance, made this known during a news conference in Katsina on Friday.

Jari said the State Government also approved 35 per cent of the chief executives’ annual salaries as their furniture allowance. He noted that the increment took effect from January 2012, adding that the furniture allowance will be reviewed every four years.

The commissioner further said that beneficiaries included five Managing Directors, nine General Managers and 14 Executive Directors, under the state civil service.

He urged the beneficiaries to intensify effort toward effective service delivery and delivery of dividends of democracy to the citizenry. (NAN)

Harry Redknapp Confirmed As QPR Manager

Harry Redknapp is the new Queens Park Rangers manager after the club

finally decided to sack Mark Hughes.

Rangers fired Hughes after they failed to win any of their 12 Premier League games this season, putting their place in the top flight at severe risk.

The club go to Manchester United tomorrow sitting four points adrift of Southampton at the bottom of the table and the board insisted they had no choice but to terminate his contract.

LAGOS: ACN Loses Another LG To PDP, Fresh Election To Be Held In Yaba.

After losing Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area to its rival, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the ruling party in Lagos State, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Thursday lost another local council, the Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA, to the PDP.

Delivering judgment in a petition filed by Otunba Busari Ayinde of the PDP against the declaration of Dr. Augustine Arogun of the ACN as the winner of the 26 November, 2011 local government election in the state, the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lagos, held that the PDP candidate actually won and should be sworn in immediately.

The tribunal also nullified the declaration of Mr. Jide Jimoh of the ACN as the winner of the election held in Yaba Local Council Development Area and ordered a fresh poll in the council.

The tribunal said it based its decisions on the irregularities that took place during the conduct of the election in the two councils.

The death of a nine-month-old boy pits the parents against the management of a crèche in Lagos, writes ADEOLA BALOGUN

When both Mr. Anthony and Dr. Jennifer Abuneme gave birth to their first child on Feb. 11, 2012, their joy knew no bounds. In their excitement, the couple decided to christen the new born baby, Osezua Emmanuel.

Among the Ishan of Edo State, the name Osezua means ‘good things come from God’. It was understandable. The Abunemes got married on May 14, 2011 and the same month, the wife got pregnant and later gave birth to a bouncing baby boy.

To the admiration of his parents, Osezua grew up very fast and was soon known as a vivacious boy. By September, he was registered at the crèche section of the Masters Ville Children School, Ajao Estate. He was doing well until tragedy struck two months later.

On Nov. 12, Osezua’s parents dropped him off at school at about 7 am and went to their different places of work. Unfortunately, it was the last time they would see him alive.

About three hours after the Abunemes had left, they were informed that their son, whom they had left in the care of a nanny, had been rushed to the Faith City Hospital, breathless.

Sixty-eight-year-old Adebisi Coker, who lost her only two children, Bukky and Toyin, in the building that collapsed at Jakande Low Cost Housing Estate, Isolo, Lagos, on Wednesday, has been moved to Lagoon Hospital, Apapa, Lagos.

She was taken to the hospital on Friday by a relation and Peter Adegoke, whose family took Coker in after her rescue from the debris of the building.

Adegoke told our correspondent on Friday that Coker had yet to be told of her daughters’ deaths.

“We have to get her prepared. We decided to place her under medical care in order to make her fit enough to hear the sad news,” he said.

Coker sustained bruises on her back and leg when the part of the bungalow she was living at the estate collapsed, killing her two children.

Peter said, “She asked of her children today, but we told her they were still receiving treatment. But she insisted I should help to check on them at the hospital.

“We are really concerned about her health. We don’t want her to break down when she eventually receives the news.”

On Monday, as members of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa jury filed out to deliberate over the murder case against Jerome Power, the 50-year-old suspect dumped a glass of water on his lawyer’s head, according to the Gazette.

“It should have been a mistrial,” Power said after dumping the water on attorney Steve Addington. “You sold me out!”

Power is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly strangling to death his neighbor, Doris Bevins, 68, in her home on Sept. 19, 2010. Police said they found Power hiding behind the front door when they responded to the 911 call from Bevin’s friend who was on the phone with her when she was attacked.

The ABA Journal reports that Power’s lawyer argued there was no DNA linking the defendant to the crime and questioned why Power would try to rob and attack a woman that, everyone in the neighborhood knew had no money.

This isn’t the only strange behavior exhibited by Power during the trial, according to KWWL.

Last week, Power held up a hand-written sign, claiming someone else killed his neighbor.

The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly yesterday gave President Goodluck Jonathan a hard knock for addressing the nation through a media chat, adding that it was unconstitutional for a president to do so.

The Senators generally took this position on Thursday during the second reading of a bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, for an Act to provide for the State of the Nation Address by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, saying that His Excellency should come to the National Assembly to do so.

The presiding judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Gabriel Kolawole on Friday, postponed the delivery of judgement on how the $12.4 billion oil windfall money accrued to the Federal Government between 1988 and 1994 was spent.

General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida was in power at that time and most analysts see the new development as a curious one. They believe the verdict is being delayed deliberately because of the calibre of the defendants.

The Federal Government had in 1994 constituted the Pius Okigbo Panel, with a mandate to investigate the activities of the CBN and recommend measures for the re-organisation of the apex bank.

Photo Of The Two Sisters Killed in Lagos During A Building Collapse

A building located in Low Cost Housing Estate, otherwise called Jakande estate, in Oke-Ake-Afa, Isolo area of Lagos, collapsed, 2 days ago, killing two graduate sisters.

The mother of the dead girls, identified as Mrs Coker, a widow, who was brought out of the debris alive was, however, in coma yesterday. Affected were flats 2, 4 and 6 of the six flat low-cost houses built over 30 years ago.

The building, Block M20, according to eye witnesses started showing cracks and sinking over a year ago. The tragic incident as gathered, occurred at about midnight causing a deafening sound.

Vanguard gathered that while occupants in flats 2 and 4 managed to escape, those in flat 6 – Mrs Coker and her two children: Toyin, a graduate of the University of Lagos and her younger sister, Bukola, did not.

"No Sanitation Tomorrow": Lagos State Government

Lagos State government has suspended the order restricting movement of people during the November monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise stated for tomorrow, Saturday, November 24, 2012.

According to Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, the suspension was to allow easy movement for students and invigilators, who will write and supervise the state-wide Senior Secondary School Examination across the nation, with no exception to Lagos State.

He added that it was also to ensure hitch-free movement of examination materials to examination centres.

Bello, therefore, urged everyone to observe the environmental sanitation day exercise, by ensuring the cleaning of their immediate environment, frontage drains and bag their refuse properly, in spite of the lift on the order restricting movement.

Airtel Sets New Record, Completes Largest Network Transformation in African Telecoms History

Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, says it has undertaken an end-to-end network transformation programme across its mobile operations in 16 African countries, African manager reports.

The company said in a statement made available to PANA here that the programme, which is the largest of its kind on the African continent, was carried out in partnership with Ericsson, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and services to mobile and fixed network operators.

President Goodluck Jonathan got a big backer yesterday in his row with former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the government’s approach to the Boko Haram insurgency.

To former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Obasanjo’s criticism of the Jonathan administration’s handling of Boko Haram is “highly irresponsible”.

The doyen of accounting, Mr. Akintola Williams, also lashed out at Obasanjo.

Both spoke in Lagos on the sideline at the launch of a book, “Stay at the top”, authored by a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), Mr. Omoniyi Komolafe.

A 24-year-old pregnant woman, Funke Jamiu was on Thursday remanded in Kirikiri prisons by an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for biting off a chunk of her co-tenant’s breast during a squabble.

According to the police prosecutor, Cpl. Oluwafemi Adeleye, the accused on November 4 bite off one Bola Ajiboye’s breast during a fight.

Adeleye told the court that Jamiu, a housewife, reportedly committed the offence at No. 17, Awolo St., Isheri-Osun, Ijagemo, Lagos.

He said, “The defendant, who confessed to have committed the act, did not only inflict her co-tenant with bruises but also used her fingers and her teeth to cut off part of Ajiboye’s breast.”
