UPDATED: Violence In Kano As Igbo And Hausa Youths Clash


A mispronunciation taken to be blasphemous in Nigeria’s north sparked a riot by Muslim youths Thursday, leaving four people dead as well as a church and shops burnt, police and residents said.

“What happened in (the town of) Bichi was misinformation,” Kano state police chief Ibrahim Idris told reporters. “Rumours went round that someone blasphemed the Prophet and there was a breakdown of law and order.”

Residents reported four people dead along with the church and Christian-owned shops burnt. Soldiers and policemen deployed in the town.
The riot came on the same day that former British prime minister Tony Blair and the incoming spiritual head of the world’s Anglicans Justin Welby launched an initiative in the Nigerian capital Abuja aimed at Muslim-Christian reconciliation.

Nominees for 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year Revealed

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), has released a five-man shortlist for their 2012 African Footballer of the Year Award.

Only Didier Drogba, who won the award in 2009, is the past winner included. The rest are: Moroccan Younes Belhanda (Montpellier), Ivorian Yaya Toure (Manchester City), Senegalese Demba Ba (Newcastle United) and Christopher Katongo, who won this year’s African Cup of Nations with Zambia.
The winner will be announced on December 17, after voting online. Black Stars midfielder, Andre Ayew, won the 2011 edition.

38-Year-Old Major Drug Dealer Arrested In Lagos

A suspected major cannabis dealer in Lagos has been apprehended by officers of the Lagos State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The arrest was made during raids on selected volatile areas used as hideouts by drug trafficking gangs in the State.

 Dried weeds suspected to be cannabis weighing 584kg was seized from the drug gangs at Olosha, Mushin where the suspect, Dada Etop Ejalonibu, 38 years old was apprehended. The suspect is currently being interrogated by narcotic investigators attached to the Lagos command.

Boko Haram Kill 11 People In Maiduguri

Gunmen suspected to be members of Islamist Boko Haram have killed 7 persons in Lawan Bukar ward of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Resident of the area said that, the gunmen attacked the ward between 7:45 am and 9:00 am Thursday following allegations that the residents earlier arrested 2 members of the sect, which they handed over to the Joint Task Force- Operation Restore Order, during one of the Boko Haram deadly attacks in the area.

FIFA Refuses Drogba’s Request To Move To Europe


The world Football Governing body, FIFA has turned down request of the Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba, to be allowed to move over to an European club on loan, pending the opening of the next transfer window, in order to continue with his training even as the Chinese season has come to an end.

In response Drogba’s request, FIFA said: “We can confirm that the player, Didier Drogba submitted a request for authorization to be registered outside an open registration period for a club on a loan basis.

“FIFA has informed him about the relevant regulations… that players may only be registered during one of the two annual registration periods fixed by the relevant association.”
FIFA had said that such request could only be granted if Drogbe’s contract with the Chinese club had come to an end.

It has earlier been rumoured that Drogba had indicated serious interest to move back to Chelsea to continue training until the commencement of African Cup of Nations early next year.

The former Chelsea player will be away in China until 2015 when his contract ends.

Viewers Shocked As Two Fox News Anchors Resign Live On Air

Two news anchors at a Fox affiliate station in Bangor, Maine have sensationally quit live on-air, citing a longstanding battle with senior management over journalistic practices.

Co-anchors Cindy Michaels, 46, and Tony Consiglio, 28, shocked both staff and viewers by announcing their resignations at the end of Tuesday’s 6 p.m. broadcast.
Michaels, who was also the station’s news director, said she had grown frustrated with senior management's influence and desire for 'somewhat unbalanced news,' particularly in relation to politics.

 Irate youths went on rampage on Thursday morning reportedly setting several houses and shops on fire in Bichi, a town outside Kano metropolis in Kano state.

According to eyewitnesses, trouble started when an Igbo tailor, simply called Chibuike, wrongly pronounced the Hausa name for a popular outfit. The story was reportedly spread by some who heard him, saying that he had blasphemed, which led to the violence.

The Joint Task Force, JTF, has dispatched vehicles to the area.
Most residents have been forced indoors by tear gas which the security agents have been firing.
No reports of casualty yet.

Husband Returns from Night Vigil at 3am, Catches His Wife In Bed With Her Boyfriend


A man who had gone for an all-night prayer got the shock of his life when he caught his 'faithful' wife pants down with a neighbour on his bed at their matrimonial home. The incident is said to have happened at around 3am.

“The two lovebirds’ timing was wrong as Maskiri decided to return earlier than expected and he caught them in the act. He then alerted some neighbours who proceeded to report the matter to the police,” said a witness.

A source said the husband, only identified as Maskiri, returned home from prayers earlier than the usual time and this helped him to catch his unfaithful wife, Fungai Sibanda, having sex with their neighbour, identified as Tinashe Mutuwari.

Jonathan’s younger brother, who had been battling an undisclosed illness, was flown in from the president’s home state, Bayelsa, on Sunday last week to the Aso Rock Villa Medical Centre for treatment.

His demise was announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the president on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati on Sunday.

A pregnant mother-of-two who desperately wanted a daughter jumped from a cliff-top when she discovered the twins she was carrying were boys, a coroner’s court has been told.

Anna Byrne, 35, a nurse from Dunboyne, County Meath, was left ‘devastated’ when ultrasound scans in March this year showed she would be having two more boys. In the months before her death she noticed baby girls everywhere and avoided her friends – particularly those with daughters.

In the early hours of March 8, six days after attending a psychiatrist complaining that she was feeling low, she jumped from a cliff-top at Howth summit, Dublin, the city’s Coroner’s Court was told.

Children Killed and Injured: U.S. Court Jails a Nigerian Woman to 80 Years
A Houston jury has reached a decision on the sentencing phase of the trial against Jessica Tata, a daycare owner whose home caught fire, killing and injuring several children.

On November 13, Tata was found guilty of murdering 16-month-old Elias Castillo and sentenced to 80 years in prison.

Tata, 24, left children in a home on Crest Park near Waypark alone with a pan of grease heating on a stove while she went shopping on Feb. 24, 2011. When she got home, the house was on fire. Elias, Shomari Dickerson, 3, Elizabeth Kojah, 20 months, and Kendyll Stradford, 20 months, all died in the fire. Three other children were hurt.

Jurors took eight hours to decide on punishment. Tata will be eligible for parole in 30 years.

Tinubu's Son, Seyi, Failed The Law School Exam.

Son of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) national leader and the Aare Ago of Egbaland, Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oluwaseyi, was among the 1,552 Law School students that were not called to bar yesterday, Tuesday, November 19, 2012 after they failed their examinations. 

Seyi, as he is fondly called, had earlier failed his Bar Part 1 examination but had to repeat the exam. He was admitted at the Lagos campus of the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island. 

Meanwhile, the former Osun State governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and the daughter of former Ekiti State governor, Segun Oni, Yemisi, were among the 3,896 that were called to the Nigerian Bar by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mariam Aloma Muhktar yesterday. The call bar ceremony was held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. 

About 5,449 students had sat for the August final examination out of which nine passed with First Class, 195 had Second Class Upper, 900 had Second Class Lower and 2,783 had Pass.

The 1,552 that reportedly failed the examination would therefore re-sit the examination.

BREAKING NEWS: Kogi State Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, Has Resigned.


Following the protracted leadership crisis that rocked the Kogi State House of Assembly for over five weeks, the speaker Alhaji Abdulahi Bello, has finally resigned his appointment.
This is coming barely two weeks that the Speaker, Benue House of Assembly, Mr David Iorhemba, also took a similar decision.
Bello has, to this effect endorsed Honourable Momoh-Jimoh Lawal as the new Speaker putting aside all options.
The Chief Whip, Salihu Saidu Akawu, a  close friend of Bello and the spokesman of the group has also resigned.
Honourable Akawu was the chairman, House Committee on Information and Publicity.
Others who were previously reported to have been impeached but retained their positions were Emmanuel Omebije who retained his deputy Speaker’s seat, the majority leader, Yakubu Yunusa and the minority leader, Yori Afolabi among others went back to their seats.

Tribal Crises In Nasarawa Killed 7 People, Many Houses Burnt Down.


About seven persons were, yesterday, reportedly killed and 14 houses burnt in the Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State in renewed clashes between Koro and Eggon tribesmen.
Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Akeremale, confirmed the killing in Lafia, saying several houses were also destroyed by fire during the hostilities between the two tribes in Gwadanye area of Agyaragu. The constituency office of the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Elisha Agwadu, was among those razed.

Motorcycle troubleEyewitnesses said the fight started when an Eggon boy was arrested by a vigilante group for allegedly stealing a motorcycle.

Upon investigation it was discovered that other boys, who were Koro by tribe, were involved in the act but had escaped.

Israel and the Hamas movement which governs Gaza last night agreed a ceasefire to end a week of violence in which nearly 160 people have died, Egyptian and Hamas officials said.

The ceasefire was announced by Egyptian Foreign Minister Kamel Amr alongside United States secretary of State Hilary Clinton is intended to come into effect at 19:00 GMT (21:00 local time), the officials say. Similar predictions on Tuesday failed to produce a deal.

3 People Crushed To Death As Container Falls On A Car In Lagos


Three persons were yesterday crushed to death when a 40-feet containerized vehicle fell on a Mazda car on the Badagry-Seme Expressway.
The accident which occurred at about 1.15 p.m., was attributed to the bad road which has been a nightmare to commuters and other users of the road.
The containerized vehicle with registration number XT 339 AKD was said to be conveying some goods when it lost control and fell on the car, with four occupants. Three of the passengers died instantly, while the driver was in a critical condition.
