Fashola To Sack 30,000 Katangowa Traders

The popular Katangowa market in Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area, LCDA of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, will soon be no more. The market is known for second hand clothes business, popularly called Okirika and spare part trading.

With a population of over 30, 000 traders, the market is one of the biggest Okirika market in Nigeria. The traders claimed they have been trading in the area for about 30 years.

Last Thursday, Governor Babatunde Fashola, during a tour of facilities in the Lagos metropolis visited the market as part of plans by the government to build a Digital Village that may cost the government billions of naira in the area.

The plan was to relocate the traders in Computer Village in Ikeja to the area. If this is achieved, what is the fate of the displaced traders in the Katangowa market?

The America University of Nigeria, AUN, Yola,owned by the former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has been described as one of the world’s leading centres of excellence by Google.

The Internet multilingual, social networking and identity service provider entered into a major collaboration effort with the University in order to boost ICT infrastructure in AUN giving the institution a grant of US $112,400 (about N17,000,000).

GistNaija gathered that the institution has been working on the partnership for almost a year and by the agreement, the University will use the funds from the internet giants to purchase goods and services that will help support and expand its network.

The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested two suspected child kidnappers in different parts of Abeokuta.

The two suspects – Ronke Akindele and Life Nwem – were arrested in Eruwon and Idi-Ori areas of the city respectively when they attempted to kidnap their victims in separate incidents.

The state’s NSCDC Acting Commandant, Mr. Dele Adetarami, while parading the suspects, said Akindele attempted to kidnap one-year-old Basit, who was playing in company with his three-year-old brother in front of their house at Eruwon.

This dream was a mirage not in the case of Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, who was beaten mercilessly with a fire-wood to the point of death by his own biological son, Hassaini Magagi.

The cruel son, Hassaini Magagi, 23, did not also spare his mother, Hajia Hajara Magagi that night. He also brutalised her to until she went into a coma.

The mother was reportedly responding to treatment in a medical centre in the community.

On his love life:

California Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday named four new Superior Court judges for the Central Valley. Among the judicial appointments announced was the appointment of 48-year-old Nigerian woman, Bunmi O. Awoniyi in Elk Grove, California.

According to Central valley business times, of the four, three replace judges who have retired and the fourth fills a long-standing vacancy.

Ms. Awoniyi has served as a principal attorney with a family law practice since 1994. She was an adjunct professor at the University of Northern California, Lorenzo Patiño School of Law from 1997 to 1998, an associate attorney at the Law Office of Steven L. Wessels from 1993 to 1994 and an associate attorney at the Law Office of Brady and Kent from 1992 to 1993.

Ms. Awoniyi was a law clerk at the Law Office of D. Kapp Nees in 1991 and a crown prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service in London from 1989 to 1990.

Awoniyi earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the Inns of Court School of Law, a Masters of Law degree from the University of Leicester School of Law and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Essex.

She is a certified family law specialist. She fills the vacancy created by the conversion of a court commissioner position on December 3, 2011. Awoniyi is a Democrat.

Each of the new judges will be paid $176,789 (over N28 million) per year.

Michael Jurkovich was named to a judgeship in the Madera County Superior Court.

Brian McNamara was appointed to a judgeship in the Kern County Superior Court.

And Bunmi Awoniyi and Steven Gevercer were named to judgeships in the Sacramento County Superior Court.

A recent report indicates that Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, made $3.5 Billion in last month of November from his social network, Facebook.

Google Finance has quoted a closing price for Facebook of 28 on Nov. 30, 2012. Facebook, Inc. is written up as a United States-based company, which operates as a social networking Website. Facebook develops technologies which facilitate the sharing of information through the social graph, which is the digital mapping of people’s real-world social connections.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Yobe, says it has discovered explosive assembling house in Damaturu, one week after recovering over 5 000 rounds of ammunition buried in Damaturu.

Lt. Eli Lazarus, the JTF spokesman told newsmen in Damaturu on Sunday that the taskforce made the discovery during a search operation at Buhari Housing Estate, on Maiduguri – Gashua Road Bypass.

He explained that two riffles, ammunitions, magazines, medical equipment and tear gas canisters were recovered during the search.

“Other items recovered include, military, police and immigration uniforms, while a decomposed corpse was found in the house,” Lazarus said.

The spokesman advised members of the public to be vigilant and report suspicious persons in their areas to the taskforce.

He assured that the taskforce would cooperate with the people in the state to provide adequate security for them.

PDP Wins Kubau, Zaria LG Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP has) was on Sunday declared winner of the chairmanship seats in Kubau and Zaria Local Government Areas of Kaduna State in the Saturday’s council poll.

The Returning Officer, Muhammad Sule-Basawa, said Khalid Yalwa-Kubau of PDP polled 75 609 votes to defeat Rilwanu Mohammed-Inuwa of CPC who polled 19 326 votes.

Sule-Basawa said, “having scored the highest number of votes and satisfied the requirements of the law, Yalwa-Kubau is hereby returned as duly elected chairman of Kubau Local Government’’.

In a related development, the PDP Chairmanship Candidate, Lawal Balarabe, polled 146 704 votes to defeat Lawal Jibril of CPC who scored 131 358 votes in Zaria council election.

A dog at a Russian zoo has adopted three tiger cubs after their birth mother deserted them.

The tiger cubs--two male and one female--were born on Nov. 14 at Oktyabrsky Zoo in Sochi and soon abandoned by their tigress mother, Bagira, who had done the same thing with a different litter earlier this year.

Zoo officials posted an ad online seeking a temporary tiger mom, but a white Swiss Shepherd named Tallim was chosen to fill the surrogate role.

Man Robs Bank 55 Minutes After He Was Released From Prison

A man could very well have set a record for the shortest stretch of time between lockups, requiring a mere 55 minutes to land himself back in jail after being released.

Christopher Franklin Weaver, 33, walked out of Lane County Jail as one of 32 recently released inmates, walked about a mile or so and allegedly promptly robbed a bank, police in Eugene, Ore., said.

He was caught by authorities at the Pacific Continental Bank and returned to Lane County Jail. Nobody was injured during the alleged robbery.

Terry Tha Rapman Loses Mother, Dedicates A Poem To Her

Popular rap artiste, Terry Tha Rapman, has lost his mother. The ‘Boys are not smiling’ singer, didn’t reveal what were the causes of her death, or when she died.

At least 10 persons were killed on Sunday when unknown gunmen attacked worshippers at a Church and a road construction crew in Chibok town of Borno State, North West Nigeria.

According to a security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attacks were likely carried out by the radical militant sect, Boko Haram.

In a separate attack, gunmen also burned down government buildings in the border town of Gamboru in Ngala local government area of Borno state.

The spokesman of the military Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno State could not be immediately reached for comments.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The presiding Bishop and general overseer of living faith churches worldwide,Bishop david oyedepo has been asked to pay N2 billion over the death of a 3 year old girl Imienfan Omokaro who got drowned at Kingdom Heritage Model School operated by Winners Chapel in Benin.

Imienfan was said to have drowned in a drum of water placed in the school toilet on November 1,2012 in benin.A letter written by Omokaro’s Counsel, Prince Peter E. Uwadiae-Igbinigie and, dated November 28, 2012 and made available to journalists in Benin, explained that the amount was “for the callous and senseless killing of our client’s daughter, Miss Imienfan Omokaro.”

Mr. Omokaro’s lawyers want Kingdom Heritage Model School to tender unreserved apology in three national newspapers, warning that if the demands were not met within 14 days, “we have the irrevocable instructions of our client to commence legal action against the school (Kingdom Heritage Model School) and Church (Winners Chapel) without any further correspondence from this Chambers.”

The little girl was a KG 1 student,sources say that the school authorities did not inform the mother of the girl about the death until late in the evening. A source who pleaded anonymity stated that the school authorities had kept the girl for over an hour praying for her,before finally taking her to Irowa Hospital in Benin, where she was confirmed dead.

Crocodile Snatches 9-Year-Old Boy Swimming In River, Boy Still Missing.

Police are searching for a 9-year-old boy who was snatched by a crocodile as he was swimming in the mouth of a river in northern Australia.

Northern Territory police say the boy was swimming with a group of people at Port Bradshaw on Saturday when he was grabbed by the crocodile. Nearby people attempted to kill the crocodile with spears, but it then dragged the boy farther into the water. Police planned to continue searching on Monday but expressed pessimism about the chances of finding the boy alive.

Two weeks ago, another crocodile snatched a 7-year-old girl who was swimming at a Northern Territory waterhole. The crocodile was fatally shot the next day and the girl’s remains were found inside it.

Just before after Kim Kardashian, who was in Kuwait earlier this week, opened the Bahrain branch of her Millions of Milkshakes shop, more than 50 hardline Islamic protesters had gathered to denounce the 31-year-old's presence in the Gulf kingdom. Riot police were forced to fire tear gas at the angry crowd.

The protesters were seen chanting 'God is Great' near the shopping complex in Riffa, about 12 miles south of the capital Manama. They were however cleared before Kim appeared late today.

They are thus forced to rely on their personal equity in different situations and they soon begin to question the value of their country to them.

The Peoples Democratic Party has said it has no plans to wade into the rift between President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, over the best way to tackle militancy and terrorism in the country.

The National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, said the party had not seen any reason to intervene in the argument.

He stated that though Jonathan and Obasanjo had expressed divergent opinions on the 1999 invasion of Odi, it did not amount to conflict between them.

Metuh said, “You only reconcile people who have a misunderstanding or are in a squabble. As far as the party is concerned, there is no quarrel between President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, so there is no plan to reconcile them.

“Though both of them have expressed divergent opinions on some national issues, both of them are still working together towards deepening democracy in Nigeria and making sure that we deliver on our promises to the people.”

Controversy has continued to trail the Will of the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu barely 48 hours after it was read.

After all, this is not the first time a first son is disinherited from his father’s Will. If truly my father disinherited me from his Will, that does not stop me from being Ojukwu’s first son,” he stated.
