Britain To Permit Gay Marriages In Churches

Britain will announce plans next week to allow gay marriages in churches and other religious buildings, officials said Friday, although Prime Minister David Cameron insisted no faith group would be forced to hold them.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller will unveil ministers' responses to a consultation earlier this year, which will propose that religious organisations should be able to 'opt-in' to hold same-sex weddings, according to a government source.

Amid strong opposition from the Church of England and Roman Catholics, however, as well as many members of Cameron's Conservative party, Miller will stress that no religious groups will be forced to conduct gay weddings.

Ebonyi State University Expels 33 Students, Suspend 88 Students.

                     

About thirty-three students of Ebonyi State University, EBSU have been expelled while eighty-eight others have been suspended by the school authorities over an alleged misconduct, examination malpractices and admission racketeering.

In a statement signed by the institution’s Registrar and Secretary to the Senate, Mr. Egwu Sam, it was disclosed that the Senate of the institution had at its 22nd emergency meeting, held on Thursday, August 23rd, 2012, decided to make public the offences of all the affected
students.

He further explained that the suspension and expulsion of the students was in accordance with the institution’s rules and regulations.

He said, “The suspended students for the stipulated period are to fail their examination and in addition should
also stay away from the university for the period of the suspension and apply to the Registrar for re- admission when their suspension tenure elapses.”

Mr Sam however assured that the suspended students will fail all their examination during the period of their suspension and would have to register and retake all their courses when they resume back.

WAEC to Release NOV/DEC Results in 2 Weeks Time

                         

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has assured candidates, who sat for the November/ December Senior School Certificate Examination of the examination body that they will start to get their results in two weeks time.

This was made known by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the Council, Yusuf Ari on Friday in Lagos.

According to him, “We had finished the marking exercise for the November/December SSCE for private candidates since November… The entire process of conducting and collating was quite impressive because there were no negative reports from any of the centres nationwide… We used limited logistics, and this to a great extent relaxed the pressure we normally had during the May/June examination,” he added.

Luck ran out on a middle-aged suspected vandal, Thursday as he was electrocuted while vandalizing one of the transformers serving Akanchawa Udenwa area of Owerri metropolis.

Relatives of the schoolchildren Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye killed and injured in his car accident were upset when the musician was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment on Wednesday.

“Twenty-five years is not enough,” the aunt of one of the boys exclaimed outside Protea Magistrate’s Court, Soweto.

“How do you give 25 years for the life of four children? How? It is not enough. Other people get 15 years for killing one child.”

Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala were each sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for murder and four years imprisonment for attempted murder.

Zambian National Assembly Warns Female MP Over ‘Improper’ Dressing.

  Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mkhondo Lungu has cautioned Petauke Central member of Parliament Dora Siliya over her dressing. Mr Lungu on Thursday said MPs should dress properly in Parliament, thezimbabwemail reports.

The Deputy Speaker said it is against Parliamentary etiquette for a member to be improperly dressed while attending sessions in chambers, as this demeans the status of the House. Mr Lungu, however, exercised restraint on Ms Siliya and just advised her to dress properly as she comes to Parliament in future.

The Deputy Speaker’s caution followed a point of order raised by deputy minister of youth and sport and Mongu Central MP Nathaniel Mubukwanu (Patriotic Front), who demanded to know if Ms Siliya was in order to enter the chambers while “improperly” dressed.

Ms Siliya wore a tight black skirt, green silver sleeveless body top, black high-heeled shoes and silver bangles which matched her ear rings.

Jonathan In Otuoke For Brother’s Funeral

                             

President Jonathan arrived at his Otuoke residence yesterday, shortly before 3:00pm, ahead of the burial of his younger brother on Saturday.

The president was received by the governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, as well as senior security officials, after which members of his family briefed him on the arrangements for the funeral.

The president’s arrival was preceeded by that of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, who had arrived Otuoke on Wednesday where she took charge of some of the arrangements.

The All Africa Students Union (AASU) has picked former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George as the winner of its 15th edition of the Africa Leadership award. 

George's nomination was based on recommendations by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the ratification by the executive council of AASU. 

Disclosing this was the Nigerian representative at AASU and Project Co-ordinator of the award, 

Olufemi Lawson, who said that George was selected from among the many nominees for the 2012 award based on his commitment to youth development and his defence of democratic institutions.

N14 Billion Is Too Much For Construction Of VP’s Residence – Senate

          

The Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday opposed the release of additional N9 billion for Vice President Namadi Sambo’s official residence now under construction.

The Chairman of the Committee, Smart Adeyemi, who spoke while on oversight visit to the site of the project said such a huge sum was uncalled for especially at a time when most Nigerians cannot afford three square meals.

“The National Assembly is not going to appropriate additional N9 billion for the project especially at a period in this country where people cannot get three square meal,” He said.

TRAGEDY: 7-Year-Old Boy Beaten To Death By His Parents, For Failing To Read His Bible

                             

Police in Las Vegas allege that a 7-year-old boy was beaten to death by his parents after failing to read the Bible or do his homework.


Roderick "RJ" Arrington Jr., was admitted to an area hospital on Nov. 29 because he was unresponsive, according to the Las Vegas Sun. Personnel there called officers to the scene after they observed severe bruising and brain swelling, according to a police report. The boy died the following afternoon.

Police arrested the boy's mother, Dina Palmer, 27, and stepfather, Markiece Palmer, 34, and charged them with the murder of the boy. Investigators said that Palmer "stood by and let her husband" shake and beat the boy to death.

According to KLAS, the arrest report detailed "open abrasions on [Arrington's] buttocks, severe bruising to his thighs, marks and bruises on his back and shoulders and evidence of previous beatings."

Two fishermen lost in Siberia are suspected of killing and eating their friend in order to survive, it was claimed last night. A fourth man is also missing, leading to fears that he, too, was murdered and cannibalised.

Alexander Abdullaev, 37, and Alexei Gradulenko, 35, were plucked to safety by a rescue helicopter having survived temperatures lower than minus 30C three months after embarking on their fishing trip. But police also found the remains of one of their friends, his body so hacked to pieces that he has not been identified.

A wooden stake was found nearby close to a bloodstained jacket, reported the Siberian Times.

Said a source: "We suspect, the two survivors could have killed and eaten their friend just because of hunger. But both deny they have anything to do with his death. Looking at the body parts found at the spot, we clearly saw cuts.

Mikel Obi Banned For 3 Matches And Fined £60,000 Over Chelsea-Man Utd Match Incident

                       

Chelsea's John Mikel Obi has been given a three-match ban and fined £60,000 by the Football Association for threatening referee Mark Clattenburg.

Nigerian midfielder Mikel admitted an FA charge following an incident in the match official's changing room at the end of Chelsea's game against Manchester United on 28 October.

In a personal hearing on Thursday the FA's Independent Regulatory Commission accepted that the player had genuinely believed the referee had racially abused him.

"But for that factor the suspension would have been significantly longer," the FA said in a statement.

The FA has investigated the allegation against Clattenburg and found that there was no case for him to answer.
