Wife Sets House Ablaze In Order Kill Her Husband and 3 Children

                               INJURED: Modise
A Mochudi man is fighting for his life at Deborah Retief Memorial hospital after his abusive wife set the house they were sleeping in ablaze last weekend.
As the international community observed the ‘16 Days of Activism on violence against women and children’, Shianyana Modise’s estranged wife went on rampage and attempted to burn her husband and three children including a two-month old baby, inside the house.
When describing details of the horrific incident, 39-year old Shianyana Modise told of how his habitually abusive wife, Violet, had phoned informing him that she suspected that the food in the house had been poisoned.
“I had gone to the cattle post on Friday when I received the call.
She told me that she had not cooked any food as she suspected that the food had been poisoned.
When I got back home she had put all food-stuffs into a large bowl and mixed with water.
When I asked why she did that she started throwing her usual tantrums, insulting me and throwing stuff all over the place.
She broke the furniture and other household property and I went to the police station and reported the incident.
The police told us that this time the dispute was getting out of hand and they told us that the matter would be taken to court on Monday.”
Modise said he was awoken by a cloud of smoke engulfing his bedroom at 3am on Saturday and that when he opened the bedroom door the living room was on fire and he suffered burns as he tried to escape.
“When I tried to open the door to get out of the house I found that it had been locked.
I then went through the inferno and tried to rescue Violet and the kids but their room was also locked.
I managed to break the burglar bars to my room and escaped through the window.
It was only then that I managed to break the other window and rescue the kids. I was screaming for help at the same time and my brother and other neighbours came and doused the flames and we managed to get Violet out of the house.”
Superintendent Simon Sitale of Mochudi Police confirmed the incident but said Violet was undergoing psychiatric examination before any charge could be considered against her.
“After the incident the affected family members who included children aged 11 years, 8 years and two months were taken to the hospital.
The husband was badly burnt and he was admitted in hospital while the rest were treated for shock and were released.
The woman has been admitted at Sbrana Psychiatric hospital in Lobatse for mental examination.
Should the results prove that she is sane she will face a charge of attempted murder but if not she’ll walk free,” he said.
According to family members, Violet has always been hostile to her husband’s relatives and after the marriage to Modise in 2007 she stopped all the relatives from visiting.
“We share a fence but ever since she got married to my younger brother she does not allow us into her yard but her relatives are allowed to visit any time,” Modise’s brother Marutle said.
Superintendent Sitale said the incident was the first of its kind in Mochudi and advised couples to settle disputes through family mechanisms and social services.

Egypt Vice-President Resigns as Country Votes

                                 Mahmoud Mekki

Egypt‘s vice-president has announced his resignation, on the day the country completes its voting in a controversial referendum on a draft constitution.
In the nation’s latest political upheaval, Mahmoud Mekki, appointed in August, said he had realised the role did not suit his background as a judge.
Egyptians are voting in the second leg of the referendum, which is widely expected to approve the draft.
However, opponents say this will not end the country’s unrest.
President Mohammed Morsi and his supporters say the constitution will secure democracy.
The opponents say the document favours Islamists and betrays the revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak last year.
Late on Saturday, state television announced that the central bank governor, Farouq al-Uqdah, had also resigned from his post. However, a cabinet official later denied the report.
November decree
Mr Mekki announced his resignation just hours before the end of voting in the second round of the referendum.
He said in a statement read on television: “I realised a while ago that the nature of politics does not suit my professional background as a judge.”
Mr Mekki, 58, said he had tried to resign on 7 November but that circumstances had forced him to remain.
The Israeli conflict in Gaza and President Morsi’s controversial decree on 22 November granting himself sweeping new powers delayed his decision.
Mr Mekki’s resignation statement indicated he had no prior knowledge of the decree, which stripped the judiciary of powers to question the president’s decisions.
The BBC’s Shaimaa Khalil in Cairo says Mr Mekki appeared to be giving the impression that he was unhappy with not being consulted on key decisions.
If, as expected, the draft constitution is passed, there may have been no role for Mr Mekki, as the document does not require the president to appoint a vice-president.
Seven of Mr Morsi’s leading advisers have quit over the past month, many indicating they had not been consulted over the president’s moves.
After an outcry, the president revoked much of the 22 November decree, but he refused to back down on the draft document.
The text was rushed through by a constituent assembly dominated by Islamists and boycotted by liberal and left-wing members, as it faced a threat of dissolution by the country’s top court.
Egypt has seen mass demonstrations on both sides ever since.
However, voting in the second stage of the referendum appears to have gone relatively smoothly so far.
Some 250,000 security personnel have been deployed nationwide to try to keep order.
Polling stations opened at 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Saturday. They had been scheduled to close at 19:00 but will now remain open until 23:00. Voting was also extended in the first leg.
Ballots are being cast in the 17 provinces that did not vote in the first round on 15 December.
Turnout was reported to be just above 30% in the first round, with unofficial counts suggesting some 56% of those who cast ballots voted in favour of the draft.
Official results are not expected until Monday, after appeals are heard. If the constitution passes, parliamentary elections must take place within three months.
Analysts suggest the document will be passed.
Egyptians casting votes in favour of the charter said they were voting for stability.
In the town of Fayoum, “yes” voter Hanaa Zaki told the Associated Press news agency: “I have a son who hasn’t got paid for the past six months. We have been in this crisis for so long and we are fed up.”
Opponents of the draft say it fails to protect the freedoms and human rights that they sought in the uprising that toppled Mr Mubarak. Some have also complained about the role given to Islamic clerics and what they say is a lack of a clear commitment to equality between men and women.
“I’m voting ‘no’ because Egypt can’t be ruled by one faction,” Karim Nahas, a 35-year-old stock market broker voting early on Saturday in Giza, told Reuters news agency.
Opposition activists say there will be more unrest whatever the outcome.
One voter in Ikhsas village, Marianna Abdel-Messieh, agreed. “Whether this constitution passes or not, there will be trouble,” she told AP. “God have mercy on us.”

Half-Naked, Aged Women Protest in Ogun state

Half-naked women took to the streets last Saturday at Sonde Apon, a rural community in Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, to show their displeasure over an unfortunate invasion of their community by hoodlums.
According to reports, the Sonde Apon community was besieged and attacked by 20 hoodlums suspected to have been sent by land speculators from a nearby community.
The aggrieved women, who sang sorrowful songs to express their anger over the attack, described ‘the invasion’ as one of the worst things that had happened to them, adding that it was the third time they would be experiencing such in three years.
It was gathered that during the last invasion, the hoodlums attacked with machetes, and guns at about 11.30 am when many of the residents had already gone to work. They shot sporadically, broke into houses and carted away with property and valuables.
One of the protesting women, Chief (Mrs.) Mopelola Losede, Iyalaje of Sonde Apon said “The other time, they attacked us and we petitioned the Inspector General of Police for actions to be taken against them and nothing was done. Now they are at it again. How long should we continue to live in fear because of people, who are fighting to take our land by force? In fact, our lives are not safe. Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the police should come to save us, before the worst will happen.”
In one of their futile attempts to get justice done, some members of the Sonde Apon community were arrested and locked up for days.

Chelsea Midfielder, Raul Meireles Slammed 11-Match Ban For Spitting At Referee In Instabul Derby

Former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles has been slammed an 11-match ban for reportedly spitting at a referee.
The Portuguese international who plies his trade with Fenerbache in Turkey was accused of the allegation following his dismissal in the country’s most ferocious derby against Galatasaray last weekend.
Meireles had confronted referee Halis Ozkahya after he was given a second yellow card and it was claimed then that he spat at the official while also making a homophobic remark.
Speaking after the match, the 29-year-old vehemently denied the claims and vowed to seek redress.
He said: ‘I’m really annoyed at being accused of spitting at the referee. I have an eight year old kid, can you imagine if kids at school start saying your father spat at a ref, this could ruin my reputation in the eyes of my child.
‘I have many gay friends who I deeply respects. The hand gesture I made is directed at the referee caving in to the pressure of the home fans.’
He claimed he is not a prejudiced person and that his hand gesture was by no means a homophobic one.
‘I don’t know what the hand gesture for calling somebody gay is in Turkey but what I did was entirely based around the referee being a coward and bowing to the pressure. The referee’s accusations are outrageous and are defamation, I will be taking legal action against him to prove my innocence’ he retorted.
If the ban sticks, he will be ruled out of action out until the last week of February.

Ten-Month-Old Girl, Liaoliao, Was Born With Skin Covering Her Eyes

Ten-month-old Liaoliao was born with skin covering her eyes. Only about one hundred patients in the world suffer from the condition called cryptophthalmia.
After an operation on her right eye, Liaoliao’s family hopes she will soon be able to see the world for the first time, Xiamen’s major news portal reports.
When Liaoliao was born this February, her family faced the shocking news that her eyes were covered with skin, and she had no eyelashes or eyebrows. As a result, the family were apprehensive about sharing the news of Liaoliao’s condition with their neighbors in their village in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Liaoliao after Operation
However, her family soon realized that Liaoliao could interpret light. She would always face the sun when taken outside and rubbed her eye sockets when the indoor lights were turned on.
With a glimmer of hope, Liaoliao’s family turned to the Xiamen Eye Center of Xiamen University, which had experience with cases of this kind dating back to 2007.
After an operation on November 23, Liu Zuguo, director of the Xiamen Eye Center said that at present, Liaoliao’s muscles are unable to support her eyelids while certain components within her eye have not formed fully. Therefore, the next operation will focus upon improving Liaoliao’s visual recovery.
Just over a hundred people worldwide are born with the condition where skin covers their eyeballs and the success rate for treatment is extremely low, noted.

I Was Involved In Armed Robbery To Take Care Of My Wife And Child – Suspect

About three months ago, Chibueze Nkwocha lived peacefully in Awka, capital of Anambra State, with his wife and child. He quietly earned a living as an auto mechanic. Unfortunately, in what seemed like a sudden twist of fate, he was recently arrested by the police in Lagos for alleged armed robbery.

In an interview with CRIME DIGEST, Nkwocha recounted the circumstances that lured him into robbery.

“A few weeks before my wife put to bed, I had a surgical operation for hernia. I had pulled together all my resources to pay for the operation. It wasn’t long after this that my pregnant wife put to bed. Since I was not working actively at the time, I didn’t have the money to care for my wife and child.

“I phoned a cousin of mine who lives in Lagos and explained my predicament to him. I asked him to assist me with some money. He agreed to help me and encouraged me to come to Lagos. Before this time, I had never been to Lagos in my life,” he said.

40-Year-Old Nigerian Man Excretes 90 Wraps Of Cocaine In 2 Weeks

A suspected drug trafficker recently excreted 90 wraps of a substance believed to be cocaine in 14 days.

The suspect, Peter Onyeagba, 40, allegedly tested positive for drug ingestion after his arrest at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos during an inward screening of passengers on a Kenyan Airways flight. He was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, confirmed the arrest. He said, “Onyeagba is the longest observed drug suspect since January 2012.

He began excretion the day he was arrested and took two weeks to complete observation. Some others conclude the evacuation of ingested drugs in three days, while a majority last for a week. This is the longest observed case since January.”

Onyeagba, who sells building materials for a living, is a resident of Lome, Togo. After travelling to Brazil on Nov. 15, 2012 through Ghana, Onyeagba reportedly spent two weeks in Brazil before his return to Nigeria.

Ingested drugs, according to the agency, could last for a few weeks with minimal effects on a courier if the pellets of drugs remain sealed. It could however kill in a few minutes if there is a leakage.

Onyegaba told CRIME DIGEST that he was a victim of greed. He said, “I have been selling building materials in Togo for over 10 years. I was on a business trip to Brazil with $8,000 and had planned on visiting Nigeria. Some of my friends that we usually meet in a drinking bar introduced me into drugs.

“They told me that instead of going back to Nigeria with nothing, that I should take some drugs and earn $3,000. I was not forced to smuggle the drug; I only decided to give it a try after much persuasion. I was interested in making an additional $3,000.”

The Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, reiterated the agency’s decision to continue the fight against drug traffickers. He said, “One of our strategies is to be vigilant and ensure that any suspect caught is duly prosecuted to deter others. Most suspects are just lured by greed.”

Bauchi Boy’s Dilemma: ‘Remain Male With No Manhood Or Become Female’

After having his manhood amputated by a neighbour, 12-year-old Ayuba Halilu and his parents have to choose between two options: allow Ayuba to remain a male without manhood or undergo sex change to become female.

The story of 12-year-old Ayuba Halilu of Mararraban Liman Katagum village in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State is a pathetic one. Being the easy going boy his fellow villagers say he is, he agreed to accompany his neighbour Tukur Iliyasu to a nearby bush to fetch firewood.
Unknown to young Ayuba, however, Tukur had a sinister plan.

In their accounts of the incident, the villagers said when Tukur and Ayuba reached the bush, the former over powered the latter and cut off his manhood together with testis as well as cut his neck and stomach with knife. Ayuba was left unconscious in the pool of his own blood. He was later rescued by the police and some good Samaritans who took him to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital Bauchi. He was later transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Gombe for further medical attention.

Meanwhile, Tukur fled the village to an unknown destination and till date no one knows his whereabouts.

Nkiru's Family Paid N8 Million To Kidnappers As Ransom

The Commissioner of Police in Nigeria’s Imo state, Mr Adisa Bolanta, has confirmed that the family of Nkiruka Sylvanus, the abducted Nollywood actress and Governor Rocha Okorocha’s aide, paid N8 million ransom before she was released.

Bolanta told newsmen in Owerri on Friday that the family defied repeated warnings from the police not to negotiate or pay any ransom to the abductors,
He said the family of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, did so without the knowledge of the police

The commissioner added that the police had recovered and returned N7 million paid by the family.
Bolanta said that after “we returned the money to the family, they defied our warnings and continued negotiations with the kidnappers.

“They went behind us and paid N8 million to the kidnappers,” he said.

He, however, reassured residents of the state that the fleeing kidnappers would be brought to book.
“We have made some arrests in connection with the case and very soon they will all be apprehended.
“Let me assure the good people of Imo that we will not rest until all forms of criminality has been eradicated from this state.’’

Adeboye, Others Shop For Oritsejafor’s Successor

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria is currently shopping for a candidate to occupy the president’s position.
The tenure of the incumbent, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, will expire in February 2013.

Oritsejafor had in 2010 indicated his intention to relinquish his position as PFN president owing to increased activities and commitments, as the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria, but he was asked to complete his tenure to promote unity within the body.

With his tenure gradually coming to an end, and his desire not to seek re-election, the coast is clear for interested candidates to express their interest and present their unique selling points to get what is considered as the most influential position in the Pentecostal movement.

A document made available  by a PFN source, said that Pastor Wale Adefarasin, Pastor Wale Oke, Rev Felix Omobude were among the frontrunners for the position.

Election into the soon-to-be-vacant seat is scheduled to hold in February.
Although Pastor Taiwo Odukoya was said to be a preferred choice for the position, he was said to have declined interest in the job, thus making way for Adefarasin and the others.

The document said, “However, now that the race for the PFN presidency is gathering steam, candidates have continued to signify their interest in the office.

“The candidate who has always been on the move wooing people to support his candidature is Oke. He’s said to enjoy a close relationship with Oritsejafor, being the National Vice-President (South-West).

“Meanwhile, Wale’s choice was applauded by all because of his unassuming, suave and gentlemanly disposition to issues. And indeed, Adefarasin’s tenure as Lagos PFN chairman did restore unity, direction and integrity to the body. That feat might have been a factor that earned him the office of the National Secretary when Oritsejafor succeeded Okonkwo.
“Pastor Paul Adefarasin is also said to have been working assiduously behind the scene to succeed Oritsejafor but he noticed that the national leaders would prefer him to wait for his turn.
“A group of influential pastors in the Pentecostal fold is backing (Wale) Adefarasin for the race. With this development, Paul’s ambition may have to wait or never materialise if Wale should win.
“As at the last count, nobody can really say which direction the national leaders are going because they determine who the next PFN president would be. But it is obvious that the major contenders are: Oke, Adefarasin and Felix Omobude.”

Keshi has retained majority of the foreign-based stars who helped secure qualification for South Africa 2013.

"I have not seen the father of my child in a while. I live here (Nigeria) and he lives abroad (UK), though we talk on the phone often. I come from a very strict family so my parents were a little disappointed when I got pregnant because they were hoping I would get married first but you would have to agree with me that it's not everybody that has to get married before having a child. It happened, and I wouldn't because I have to get married first abort my child. Being a single mother is not easy but I manage. How do I deal with my sexual feelings since he's not here? That's when the phone comes in. When I hear him, it's all fine. It may not work for other people that way, but it works for me. And there's no truth in the reports that my man is a married man. I don't go for married men and to the best of my knowledge he's not married.
