Christmas Tragedy: Gunmen Kill A Pastor, 5 People, Sets Church On Fire in Yobe

Gunmen attacked a church in northern Nigeria on Christmas Eve, killing six people, including the pastor, and setting the building on fire, residents and police said Tuesday.
“A group of gunmen came into the village at midnight and went straight to the church,” said Usman Mansir, a resident of Peri village near Potiskum, the economic capital of Yobe state.
“They opened fire on them, killing the pastor and five worshippers. They then set fire to the church,” he added, specifying that a branch of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) was targetted.
A senior police official in Yobe confirmed the details to AFP, but declined to be named.
Yobe police chief Sanusi Rufa’i said “this is a security issue” and refused to comment further.
It was not clear who was behind the latest violence.
While Yobe’s population is overwhelmingly Muslim, the commercial hub of Potiskum has a significant Christian minority. Peri is just two kilometers outside the city.

Pope's Delivers His Christmas Message, Addresses Terrorism In Nigeria

Pope Benedict used his Christmas message to the world on Tuesday to say people should never lose hope for peace, even in conflict-riven Syria and in Nigeria where he spoke of “terrorism” against Christians.

Marking the eighth Christmas season of his pontificate, the 85-year-old read his “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) message to tens of thousands of people in St Peter’s Square and to millions of others watching around the world.

Delivering Christmas greetings in 65 languages, Benedict used the Biblical analogy of the “good soil” to underscore his view that the hope represented by Christmas should never die, even in the most dire situations.

“This good earth exists, and today too, in 2012, from this earth truth has sprung up! Consequently, there is hope in the world, a hope in which we can trust, even at the most difficult times and in the most difficult situations,” he said.

In his virtual tour of the some of the world’s trouble spots, he reserved his toughest words for Syria, Nigeria and Mali.

“Yes, may peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims,” he said.
“Once again I appeal for an end to the bloodshed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict.”

The leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics also condemned conflicts in Mali and Nigeria, two countries where Islamist groups have waged violent campaigns.

“May the birth of Christ favor the return of peace in Mali and that of concord in Nigeria, where savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians,” he said.

Woman Sacked For Being Naturally “Irrestible” And “ Too Sexy”

Melissa Nelson
Melissa Nelson
After working as a dental assistant for ten years, Melissa Nelson was fired for being too “irresistible” and a “threat” to her employer’s marriage.

“I think it is completely wrong,” Nelson said. ”I think it is sending a message that men can do whatever they want in the work force.”

On Friday, the all-male Iowa State Supreme Court ruled that James Knight, Nelson’s boss, was within his legal rights when he fired her, affirming the decision of a lower court.

“We do think the Iowa Supreme Court got it completely right,” said Stuart Cochrane, an attorney for James Knight. “Our position has always been Mrs. Nelson was never terminated because of her gender, she was terminated because of concerns her behavior was not appropriate in the workplace. She’s an attractive lady. Dr. Knight found her behavior and dress to be inappropriate.”

For Nelson, a 32-year-old married mother of two, the news of her firing and the rationale behind it came as a shock.
“I was very surprised after working so many years side by side I didn’t have any idea that that would have crossed his mind,” she said.

The two never had a sexual relationship or sought one, according to court documents, however in the final year and a half of Nelson’s employment, Knight began to make comments about her clothing being too tight or distracting.

“Dr. Knight acknowledges he once told Nelson that if she saw his pants bulging, she would know her clothing was too revealing,” the justices wrote.
Six months before Nelson was fired, she and her boss began exchanging text messages about work and personal matters, such as updates about each of their children’s activities, the justices wrote.

The messages were mostly mundane, but Nelson recalled one text she received from her boss asking “how often she experienced an orgasm.”

Nelson did not respond to the text and never indicated that she was uncomfortable with Knight’s question, according to court documents.
Soon after, Knight’s wife, Jeanne, who also works at the practice, found out about the text messaging and ordered her husband to fire Nelson.

The couple consulted with a senior pastor at their church and he agreed that Nelson should be terminated in order to protect their marriage, Cochrane said.

On Jan. 4, 2010, Nelson was summoned to a meeting with Knight while a pastor was present. Knight then read from a prepared statement telling Nelson she was fired.
“Dr. Knight felt like for the best interest of his marriage and the best interest of hers to end their employment relationship,” Cochrane said.

Knight acknowledged in court documents that Nelson was good at her job and she, in turn, said she was generally treated with respect.
“I’m devastated. I really am,” Nelson said.
When Nelson’s husband tried to reason with Knight, the dentist told him he “feared he would have an affair with her down the road if he did not fire her.”

Paige Fiedler, Nelson’s attorney, said in a statement to ABC News affiliate KCRG that she was “appalled” by the ruling.

“We are appalled by the Court’s ruling and its failure to understand the nature of gender bias.,” she wrote.

“Although people act for a variety of reasons, it is very common for women to be targeted for discrimination because of their sexual attractiveness or supposed lack of sexual attractiveness. That is discrimination based on sex,” Fiedler wrote. “Nearly every woman in Iowa understands this because we have experienced it for ourselves.”

I Was Sacked For Telling My Boss’s Wife To Close Her Legs

Dear GistNaija Readers,

My name is Andrew, a 27 year old graduate on business admin, i am currently working under my boss as his P.A, I’ve been a honest guy whilst working for him, this has brought us more closer. He was more a friend to me than a boss.

This closeness got to a level that i advice his wife about what is right to do, and when she’s bothered she won’t hesitate to seek my counsel. I never in my wildest imagination believe that i could cross my limit when I saw my boss’ wife sitting with mini skirts with her legs open, someone could have a clear vision of the structure of her………, i feeling that i could be doing right by teaching her some simple manners, told her ‘to sit well’, i don’t know whether she pretended not to understand what i meant or she didn’t actually but she ask what i meant by ‘sit well’, i told her to ‘close her legs’, now she got what i was saying and i could see some form of embarrassment written on her face, but I rendered warm apology, but she had no problem with me.

It was my boss who came out with wearing a sad look on his face, i went to him and enquired the-reason for the sadness, but i got a reply of ‘just leave you bast*rd’. I knew he wasn’t joking when he ordered the security to push me out even with me still wondering what was going on. The next day in the office, i got my sack letter with him giving me a farewell word, ‘i know you’ve seen everything you’ve been longing to see, go and have a better view of ya mother’s.

WAS I REALLY WRONG? Please Advice me!

2015: Jonathan and Obasanjo Meet Secretly

As part of efforts to keep his second term bid on track, indications have emerged suggesting that President Goodluck Jonathan has commenced moves to pacify one of his predecessors in office, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

This is coming on the heels of reports yesterday in which the President denied insinuations that the relationship between him and ex-president Obasanjo was strained.
The relationship between the two seemed to be on the slide in recent times owing to the verbal exchanges that have ensued between them, prompting suggestions in some quarters that the Owu-born soldier-turned-politician might dump his protégé for another candidate in 2015.

There were speculations that two serving governors had been lined up to square up against President Jonathan in the event that he decides to contest the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). One of the two being propped up and others from the northern part of the country have been making contact with the former president with a view to enlisting his support, especially to lend them his platform in the south west.

Sources close to the former president told LEADERSHIP in Lagos that President Jonathan penultimate Friday paid a secret visit to Obasanjo to reconcile issues with him over some grievances that the former leader might habour against him.

President Jonathan's Christmas Message To Nigerians

Dear friends,

I want to seize this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance.

I feel the pains of Nigerians and that is why this yuletide period I have personally instructed that our roads should be worked on to enable you and your loved ones travel safely for the holidays knowing that this season brings with it the highest volume of traveler traffic of the year.

This administration also made sure that most of our airports received a facelift with the terminals rehabilitated and the runways upgraded.

Not done, we ensured that for the first time in decades, the cross country services (Lagos to Kano with stops in cities along the route) of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) were revived just prior to the holidays to provide Nigerian masses with an inexpensive alternative to road and air transportation.

Nigerians traveled on these coaches which took them from Lagos to Kano beginning on Friday the 21st of December, 2012 at a very affordable rate of 1,500 Naira, with stops at many cities along the route.

This administration also took steps to increase power generation by remaining true to the Timelines of the Roadmap to Power Sector Reforms which has seen history made on Friday the 21st of December 2012, when Nigeria’s power generation hit an all time high of just over 4,500 MW which I know is still not good enough, but which nevertheless is an improvement of what we met on ground to the end that as many Nigerians as possible can celebrate the holidays with power in our homes and communities.

I reaffirm to you that, God willing, Nigeria will witness a better year in the coming year.

Once again, on behalf of my family and I and the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, wishes every Nigerian a very Merry Christmas and a most prosperous and Happy New Year. GEJ

Kidnappers Scare Igbo From Xmas Trip

IN THE SIPRIT OF THE SEASON...Shoppers at last minute buying at Yaba Market this morning. Photo...Idowu Ogunleye Kidnappers Scare Igbo From Xmas Trip

The fear of kidnappers is the beginning of wisdom for many Igbo residents in Lagos as many have refused to travel to their hometowns in the East for the Yuletide.

Investigations conducted by P.M.NEWS at various motor parks in Lagos revealed that apart from kidnapping, other reasons cited by transporters and passengers alike for the low patronage at the motor parks, were high fares, bad roads and armed robbery attacks.

Many of the Igbo travellers interviewed blamed their inability to travel home for Christmas and the New Year on the spate of kidnappings in the East.
A unionist at the Ojota Motor Park, Kola Balogun, wondered why many are not travelling to their hometowns for Christmas this year.

He said it had taken more than four hours to load a bus going to Akure, Ondo State. Apart from the high fare which is now N2,000 from the previous N1,200, he blamed bad roads and the fear of armed robbery attacks as being responsible for the low patronage.

A visit to luxury bus motor parks located at Jibowu, Yaba, Ejigbo, Ikotun, Igando and Alimosho, mostly patronised by Igbo travellers, also revealed low patronage.
The situation was so bad that luxury bus operators were forced to reduce transport fares today (Monday), Christmas eve, that was supposed to be the peak of business for them.

At Ekene Dili Chukwu Motors, Jibowu, fare was reduced from N7,000 to N6,000 and to N5,000 for luxury buses while N5,000 instead of N5,500 was charged for mini bus going to the East.
Similarly, at the Ifesinachi Motor Park, the fare was reduced from N7,000 to N6,000 for a journey to Onitsha, Enugu, Owerri in aluxury bus.

At Peace Motors, Yaba, the fare to Onitsha was reduced from N5,500 to N5,000 this morning for a journey to Onitsha in a mini bus. At Chisco Motors, Yaba, the few travellers found there were made to pay N6,000 for luxury bus and N5,000 for mini bus.

SSS Arrest Okonjo’s Kidnappers In Bank

SSS nabs Okonjo’s abductors in bank…..
Suspects arrested with N15m marked mone
Family paid N40m ransom’
Operatives of the State Security Service, SSS, have arrested six of the abductors of Prof. Keneme Okonjo, mother of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. Okonjo, wife of the Obi of Ogwuashi-Ukwu, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, was kidnapped on December 9, 2012 at the palace of the traatditional ruler.

However, through concerted efforts of the combined security agencies in the country, the victim was released on December 14. But in a bid to unravel those behind the kidnapping, arrests were made by the police, Army and men of the SSS.

Last week, 63 of the suspects earlier arrested by the Army were released unconditionally when their culpability could not be established. A competent source at the SSS told National Mirror yesterday that six of the real suspects had eventually been arrested in Asaba, Delta State, and might be flown to Abuja today.

The source also confirmed that a N40m ransom was actually paid for the release of the 82-year- old retired professor of Sociology.

Explaining how the suspects were arrested, the source said: “The N40m, which was paid to the kidnappers was marked money from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. “What happened was that the money was paid on Wednesday by our men and by Thursday, two persons had gone to the Nebisi Road branch of an old generation bank to deposit N15m out of the money.
Because it was marked money, they were promptly arrested. “Our men were able to track four of the kidnappers with the aid of the two persons. Right now, we are on the trail of the remaining four suspects.

“The six suspects are supposed to be brought to Abuja tomorrow (today) to face further interrogation.”
Asked why the operatives were not able to arrest the suspects the time they came for the money, the source explained: “Don’t forget that as at that time the woman was still with the kidnappers and they could decide to kill her if they suspect anything phony. “Our major concern then was to ensure that the woman regained her freedom and was not harmed in any way.

In fact, that was the point the minister kept hammering to us. “She said that we should do everything possible to secure her mother alive, even if it meant paying whatever ransom the kidnappers asked for. “If you know how this is done, once they came for the money, we knew that the game was up for them. We knew that we must get them unless they would not spend that money in Nigeria.”
Okonjo-Iweala had shortly after her mother release said that the abductors were unhappy with the administration of the fuel subsidy and SURE-P programmes.

Okonjo-Iweala, who had recounted what her mother told the family after her ‘miraculous’ escape from the den of the dare-devil abductors, said: “I can’t give all the details because we don’t want to compromise ongoing investigations. “But I can tell you one thing: My mother suffered a great deal during this ordeal.

It was only the Almighty God that rescued her from a situation that could very easily have ended tragically. “Apart from the emotional trauma of being violently taken away from her family and kept incommunicado for five days in a strange environment, a woman of 83 years was left without food for five days. “We give glory to God that she is alive today to tell the tale. While she was in their custody, the kidnappers spent much of the time harassing her.

They told her that I must get on the radio and television and announce my resignation. “When she asked why, they told her it was because I did not pay oil subsidy money. They also said I had blocked payment of money to certain components of the SURE-P programme.”

Thousands Want CNN Host Piers Morgan Deported Over His Views On US Gun Control Laws

A petition to have Piers Morgan deported from America over his views on gun control laws has garnered more than 31,000 signatures.

Thousands of Americans have signed a petition calling for British CNN host Piers Morgan to be deported over his criticism of the country's gun laws.

By noon on Christmas Eve, the petition - which is posted on the White House website - had garnered more than 31,000 signatures, surpassing the 25,000 required to get a response from the US government.

Mr Morgan tweeted about the petition: "If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?"

Mr Morgan has called for a tighter gun control measures in the wake of the December 14 massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

On Tuesday, he interviewed Gun Owners of America executive director Larry Pratt, and appeared incredulous when Mr Pratt suggested more weapons were a credible solution.

"You're an unbelievably stupid man, aren't you?" Morgan asked during the heated debate.

"You have absolutely no coherent argument. You don't actually give a damn about the gun murder rate in America."

Following the interview, a Texas journalist posted a petition on the White House website alleging Morgan "is engaged in a hostile attack against the US Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment".

"We demand that Mr Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens," the petition says.

Many Americans follow a literal interpretation of the Second Amendment, which enshrines the "right to bear arms" in the US Constitution.

Mr Morgan insists America can outlaw military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines without infringing on people's constitutional rights, and says he has no quarrel with the Second Amendment.

A defiant Mr Morgan refused to back down from his position.

"Ironic US gun rights campaign to deport me for 'attacking Second Amendment rights' - is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?"
Wanting America to ban assault weapons & high-capacity magazines isn't 'anti-constitutional' - it's called 'common sense'. #GunControlNow " he posted earlier on his Twitter feed, referring to freedom of speech provisions.

Meanwhile, firefighters who responded to a fire in Webster, New York, were shot dead as they tried to put out flames that tore through a home.

Piers Morgan is right, Obama should do something about the gun control laws.

Skuki Brothers Set To Launch Their Own Condoms Brands

There is nothing more joyful than to see people who have made it, give back something good to the society that make them reach their level.

Nigeria's musical group called Skuki(which includes Tunmininu and Atewologun) have just devised their own way of giving something good to the society that made them. They are to start producing their own brand of condoms and preaching about s*x education to teenagers.

The hip-hop duo who came into reckoning with their smash hit, ‘Banger’,  while justifying their foray into this particular line of venture said:
“We are great believers in the fact that the youth are the leaders of tomorrow and have to learn from a young age that if you can’t abstain, you have to play safe. But not only that, we are looking at it from the concept of family planning, of teenage pregnancies and putting a stop to it.
“Every pregnant teenager in our society is another teenager that has to stop schooling in order to handle the situation they find themselves in. It goes way more than just the condom and s*x part.” They added.

Swaziland Bans Miniskirts And Any Form Of Provocative Dressing; Offenders Face 6 Months In Jail

wear any of these, get 6 months jail term

It is now a sin to wear miniskirts in Swaziland as police in Africa’s last absolute monarchy have banned women from wearing miniskirts and midriff-revealing tops saying they provoke r*pe, local media reported on Monday.
Offenders face a six-month jail term under the ban, which invokes a colonial criminal act dating back to 1889.
“The act of the defiler is made easy, because it would be easy to remove the half-cloth worn by the women,” police spokeswoman Wendy Hleta was quoted as saying in the Independent Online news.
Not only miniskirts are affected by the ban, but the ban also applies to low-rise jeans.
“They will be arrested,” she said.
Hleta said women wearing revealing clothing were responsible for assaults or r*pes committed against them.
“I have read from the social networks that men and even other women have a tendency of ‘undressing people with their eyes’. That becomes easier when the clothes are hugging or are more revealing,” Hleta said.
However, the ban does not apply to traditional costumes worn by young women during ceremonies like the annual Reed Dance, where the ruling King Mswati III chooses a wife.
The flamboyant king already has 13 wives.
During the ceremony, beaded traditional skirts worn by young bare-breasted virgins only cover the front, leaving the back exposed. Underwear is not allowed.
The law was enforced after a march by women and young girls last month calling for protection against a spate of r*pes in the impoverished kingdom, almost entirely surrounded by South Africa.
According to the media report, the march was blocked by police who has now found what they believe is a solution to the incidence of r*pe in Southern African country. [AFP]

Bus Driver In Lagos Killed By LASTMA Official During Struggle Today

A commercial bus driver, Isaac Popoola, died on Monday after a fierce struggle with an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA. The LASTMA officials tried to seize the deceased car.

The 54-year-old breathed his last after the traffic officer allegedly hit his head on a metallic part of the bus as they struggled for control of the steering wheel.
Witnesses said that the bus left Egbeda/Akowonjo at around 6 a.m. on its way to Oshodi when a LASTMA patrol van pulled up in front of the vehicle as they approached Oshodi.

“Two officers approached the bus and one told the driver to come down and he refused. So they began to struggle,” a witness said.
The bus conductor ran into the nearby Mosafejo police station, and before he returned, his driver’s lifeless body was resting in the driver’s seat.
And a little crowd, which had gathered during the scuffle, had seized the officer.
At the Area F Police Headquarters, Ikeja, Mr. Popoola’s lifeless body lay in his bus with Lagos registration number XL166SMK. His colleagues and family members gathered around the bus; the wife’s periodic cry shattering the stillness of the afternoon.

“He is very gentle, humble. I don’t know why the LASTMA man killed my husband. Now I’m a widow,” said Dupe, the deceased’s wife, who stated that she was preparing to go to her shop when someone broke the news to her via a phone call.
“From where will I start? My children do not have father again. Who’s going to render the help? Very terrible, I can’t bear it. Who’s going to help me?” Mrs. Popoola said.

LASTMA have quickly disowned the alleged perpetrators of Monday’s fatal incident.
While naming Adesanya Olatunde and Ogunride Oludele as some of the culprits, the agency stated that the officers “acted on their own” and flouted operational guidelines.

“Adesanya was later identified by the Provost Marshall of the agency and handed over to the police while Oludele, who was reported to be off duty as at the time of the incident, was still at large,” Babatunde Edu, the General Manager of the agency, said in a statement.
“Effort is on to arrest other suspects connected with the incident,” he added.

"Rihanna and Chris Brown did get back together but it wasn’t official. They wanted to put music collaborations, pictures, tweets out to the public little by little to ease the public’s transition of acceptance. Also, they were using that time to still feel things out themselves to see if a relationship could truly work. Things were going good for them. Chris stopped by to see Rihanna in New York and she joined him on tour the week after Thanksgiving. They spent time and Chris even showered her with gifts.
They were allowing the public to see them in clubs together and even put out affectionate photos. Things were truly going well until Rihanna had to leave Chris and get back to her grind.
