2 Days To FIFA 2012 Ballon D’or: What Experts Said About Messi, Ronaldo And Iniesta

        1959777_FULL-LND

The countdown to the highly prestigious and anticipated 2012 Ballon D’or at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, has commenced. 7th January, 2013 is the day the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), awards the ‘best player of the year’ with the FIFA Ballon d’Or.
Today, we continue the countdown with reactions from prominent coaches and figures in world football on the chances of nominess for the prestigious award which has Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal/Real Madrid), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona/Spain) and Lionel Messi (Argentina/Barcelona) in contention.
On Cristiano Ronaldo:
“Portugal have a national team called Cristiano Ronaldo and a group of players who run after him.”
Carlos Queiroz
“He’s an unbelievable player. We have a pantheon of great players and Ronaldo definitely compares with any of them. Although he had a natural talent, he is in many ways manufactured himself – he practised and practised. He had a bit of the Eric Cantona about him in that way. He was definitely good value for Madrid.”
Sir Alex Ferguson
On Lionel Messi:
“Some people do not like Ronaldo because he is a great player, good-looking and has s*x with all the ladies. People get jealous. The only bad thing about Ronaldo’s life is Messi. If it was not for him, Ronaldo would have been the best player in the world for five years in a row now.”
Luiz Felipe Scolari
“Like Michael Jordan in basketball, Messi is dominating his sport. Very few people in history have managed to dominate their sport the way Jordan and Messi have. I feel sorry for those who want to compete for Messi’s throne – it’s impossible, this kid is unique. He doesn’t just score lots of goals, but he scores lots of great goals, each one being better that the last.”
Pep Guardiola
On Andres Iniesta:
“Definitely Andres Iniesta. It’s not that difficult to play well and win titles in a team like Barcelona, but it’s in the national side where you see a player’s true class. That was the case with figures like Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane. WithSpain, Iniesta has shown that he is among the best players of all time and that’s why I rate him higher than Messi or Ronaldo. Even though the latter two have incredible scoring records for their clubs, they still haven’t won anything with Argentina or Portugal respectively.”
Boris Becker on who should win the FIFA Ballon d’Or
“He is the enlightened one, [someone] touched by a magic wand. He commands so much respect on the pitch. As a football lover, I am proud to have played with him. He makes the difference and does things that no one else can do.”
Sergio Ramos
Do you agree with their views? Who do you think will win this award? Messi or Ronaldo or Iniesta?

“Where Is My Son?” – Parents Of Missing Student Ask

Disappeared without a trace since 34 days while returning to school in the East from Lagos, distraught parents of a 25-year old undergraduate, Ismail Balogun have resorted to fasting and prayer for his safe return. Balogun, a 300 level Animal Science student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, left the Maza Maza motor park on November 30, 2012 to board a bus back to school.
He is a product of a broken home. Balogun’s parents separated when he was just 19 months old. Narrating her ordeal, the mother, Oluwatoye told Daily Sun that since her son went missing in transit, she is gradually becoming mentally unstable because there was no record of any accident involving the bus he travelled in.
Ismail’s father is equally worried. He had posers. Was his son a victim or cultism of rituals? Where did his captors take the photograph they posted on Facebook? His mother told Daily Sun on phone that on the fateful day (November 30, 2012), her first son, Ismail, wanted to go back to school.
She left her residence at Ibeshe Waterside Village in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos, to her former husband’s residence on Egbe, Ikotun Road, Lagos, to see the undergraduate. Oluwatoye said she bought provisions and foodstuff for Ismail and gave him some cash. She wanted to accompany Ismail to Maza-Maza motor-park, along Lagos–Badagry Expressway, but he told her not to worry.
She said Ismail left Egbe Ikotun Road, a Lagos suburb, at about 4 pm. At after 9pm, she called him and he responded that they were just moving out of Maza-Maza. At about 11pm she called her son’s two phones and they rang but there was no response.
At about 6am she called and this time, the mobile phones were switched off. She also called again at about 12pm, yet, no communication whatsoever. According to Oluwatoye, she had since called her former husband, Musibau Balogun, who told her not to worry. He told his wife that probably Ismail could be sleeping when she phoned him.
Her words: “Since November 30 that my first son embarked on that journey back to school and was missing in transit, I cannot sleep, eat or concentrate on anything. The problem is driving me crazy. My son is such a good boy. He is my first son. He used to advise me. He used to console me when I am so worried about anything. He usually gives me good advice even about my business.
I am a trader. He would come to the market to assist me in some cases when he is in Lagos. What am I going to do now? First, I could not even eat well. Now I have started fasting since over one week. I’m praying for divine intervention. God should please save my child and allow him to return home,” Oluwatoye prayed. The father, Balogun said before Ismail left his residence on Egbe Ikotun Road, they attended the Ju’mat service at a mosque in the area. Balogun said Ismail left at about 4.30 pm to board a mini- bus at Maza-Maza enroute Umudike, in Umuahia. He said his son is a 300- level Animal Science student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, who never engaged in any violent activity.
He said he called his mates in the same school in Umudike, Umuahia, and they said he had not arrived and that they too were worried as they had called his numbers but his mobile phones were switched off. The father said at about 2.25 am, photographs appeared on the Facebook showing his son half -unclad and three other men sitting round a table and the look on his son’s face in the pictures showed that of a worried man. The other picture in which his son snapped alone beside a commercial mini- bus suspected to be the vehicle he wanted to board to Umuahia, showed him to be happy.
The questions the aggrieved father is asking are: Where did they snap the pictures they showed on the Facebook? Who did that? What was the intention of the person(s) who placed the pictures? Where is his son right now? Who were the three men around him? The father had been trying hard to unravel the mystery behind the strange disappearance of his son. He even went to Maza-Maza to ask the transporters if there was any serious accident between Lagos and Umuahia and they said, ‘none’.
He also asked if any mini-bus broke down on the road and they replied that none broke down. The worried father said he reported the matter at Area ‘E’, FESTAC Police Post and even wrote a petition in support of it. He visited the two telcoms service providers his son used while traveling to inquire about the calls made with the phones.
The staff of one of the service providers in Ladipo, Mushin, advised him to tell the police to visit the office. He said the staff said it would not cost the police a dime because they don’t charge money for rendering such assistance. Balogun said the police had allegedly refused to contact the service provider to locate the whereabouts of his son or his abductors.
He said they should have begun their investigation from Maza-Maza garage. He said they should also use the picture to locate the vehicle. In a petition addressed to Area ‘E’ Commander, dated December 9, 2012, and entitled ‘Lost in transit/kidnapping’, Balogun said his son got missing in transit. The petition read in parts: “I am appealing to the Area Commander, FESTAC to use his good office to save “my son’s life and bring those culprits to book”. The man said his son had been boarding vehicles from Maza-Maza to Umuahia for the past two years without any problem.
He said he only gave him money for transport because he had already paid money into Ismail’s account and when he reached his school, he would withdraw it from a bank in the school premises. “At about 7pm he called that he forgot his laptop and credentials in the house. I told him not to worry about that and I promised to give the items to his mates when they were going back for the Christmas. At about 9.30 pm, he flashed me and I called him back. He said they were about to move. I told him safe journey and prayed for him. We later tried his number several times, but no response. I love him so much. He is my first son.
I singularly trained him. His mother abandoned him and me when he was just one year and seven months old. The mother left us since over 23 years now. I suffered to make him an intelligent child that he is. His mother is married to another man. She lives at Ibeshe Waterside Village in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos. My son does not have many friends.
His friends are good boys who take their education seriously. He is very jovial. I don’t know whether he has a girl friend. I know he does not tolerate nonsense but he is not the violent type,” Balogun said.

                      Governor Adams Oshiomhole

Nigeria’s Edo state Governor Adams Oshiomhole has on Saturday announced the retirement of Mr Alhassan Ikeloa, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Public Utilities, for alleged dereliction of duty.
The governor made the announcement in a statement issued in Benin by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Julius Ihonvbre.

The statement stated that the governor was visibly angry over the heaps of refuse at the museum and surrounding areas and traced the problem to the Permanent Secretary’s dereliction of duty.
According quoted Oshiomhole as saying that the board of the state Civil Service would be informed of Ikelao’s retirement for ratification.

Fire Destroys Block of Flats in Abuja

A block of four flats located along Demonstration Road in Gwagwalada, a satellite town in the Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was on Saturday razed down by fire.
A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Correspondent who witnessed the incident reports that efforts by men of the FCT Fire Service to put out the fire which started at about 10 a.m. was abortive.
Some occupants of the flat who spoke to NAN blamed the cause of the fire on one of the occupants whom they alleged left her cooker on.
The accused occupant however, denied the allegation, saying that she had not even opened her kitchen when the fire broke out.
“I had not even opened my kitchen this morning. I just went across the road to buy chicken and met the house on fire on my return. My little baby would have been in the fire if not that I carried him with me,” Ifeoma Amadi, the occupant, said in tears.
One of the occupants, simply identified as Augustus, was said to have travelled to Enugu this morning to attend his sisters` burial. While other occupants of the building were seen salvaging a few property from their flats, everything in Augustus` room was burnt as access could not be gained into his apartment.
Meanwhile, Mr Ignatius Amadi, the Caretaker of the block of flats, said that the fire started from the mattress of one of the occupants. He alleged that the occupant may have left her phone on her mattress while charging it, adding that there may have been electricity spark somewhere.
The house, which according him, was the major source of income to the owner, was completely razed with properties worth millions of Naira. Some of the occupants of the flats said that besides their property that were burnt in the inferno, there were other valuable documents including certificates and cash.

How Generator Fume Wiped Out Family Of 5

The cause of death of five members of a family in Robiyan, Ijoko, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, has been revealed.
A source gathered that the victims and other members of the family had  a party on Wednesday, a day after the New Year during which they ate rice and even served their neighbours.
Unknown to them, death was lurking around the corner. Investigations revealed that they went to bed with the generator, which they kept in the verandah, on. Initially, there was suspicion that the victims might have died as a result of food poisoning but it was discovered that they must have died from fumes inhaled from the generator.
The following day (yesterday), an 80-year old woman, Madam Kuburat, and two of her grandsons, were found dead and foaming in the mouth.
Five members of the family who were found unconscious were rushed to the Ota General Hospital while three others were rushed to the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, Lagos.

REVEALED: How Intercontinental Bank Staff Stole N306 Million From Femi Falana's Account

                           photo

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has stated that the N306 million stolen from the Falana and Falana Chambers’ account was returned by the bank to avoid a legal action.

A statement released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday announced that it had arrested two suspects involved in a N1.5 billion bank fraud.

Olayinka Sanni, a former manager at Intercontinental Bank (now owned by Access Bank), and Oyebode Atoyebi, Personal Assistant to Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, were arrested by the commission for conspiracy, stealing, and forgery.
“I confirm that the sum of N306 million was stolen from our clients’ account by the officer,” said Mr. Falana.
“But I wish to say that the management of the bank refunded the money to avoid a legal action from our chambers,” he added.
Mr. Sanni, who also operates a Bureau de Change, SIDAW Ventures, allegedly transferred various sums of money into his SIDAW account without the bank’s customer’s consent, the EFCC said.
In addition to the N306 million transferred from the account of Falana and Falana Chambers, the suspect also allegedly transferred N65 million from the account of Babington Junior Seminary; N40 million from P.W. Nigeria Limited’s account; N15 million from Mikano International’s account; N20 million from Viju Industries Limited’s account, and N1.2 billion from Murhi International Limited into his company’s account.
“Besides, Sanni also collected the sum of $461,200 USD from one Chukwurah Nkiru, who sold it to him for the equivalent of N76, 559,200 but was not paid.
“Sanni is also embroiled in a foreign exchange scam where his SIDAW Ventures account was used to handle the sum of N104, 405, 000 where only N72,229,000 worth of foreign exchange was paid to the customer leaving a balance of N32, 185, 000 being hotly contested between his firm and the customer,” read the statement signed by Wilson Uwujaren, the commission’s Spokesperson.
Mr. Atoyebi, who is also enmeshed in a N501 million money laundering charge alongside Mr. Ikuforiji, was arrested for conspiracy and complicity, having allowed Mr. Sanni to use his name and passport-sized photograph to open an account in SIDAW Ventures Limited in the name of Akanmu Babatunde.
“With this fictitious name, Sanni brokered many shady deals and duped many innocent people,” the commission stated.
The EFCC said that the duo will be arraigned in court “soon".

Nigerian Man Sworn In As Belgian Councillor

Nigerian-born Collins Nweke, was on Friday sworn in as Councillor of West- Flanders Constituency in Belgium.

Nweke, a member of the Belgian Green Party, was re-elected last year having made history in 2006 when he became the first non-Belgian born politician to win an elective position in West-Flanders.

With his re-election, Nweke's mandate includes issues bordering on the economy, social policy, international development and minority priority.

"The last several years were a learning curve where some important results were equally achieved.

" I will continue to have my eyes on the ball as far as social policy is concerned, but with an expanded portfolio that includes the economy and international development.

"Small and medium enterprises are the engine of the local economy and a business-friendly environment will not only keep existing businesses in good shape but will attract new investments and create jobs.

"A number of good initiatives are ongoing and obviously these would be continued and enhanced. "It will also make sense to re-evaluate some economic activities that are liabilities to the local economy," He told News Agency of Nigeria,NAN, Western Europe Correspondent.

Nweke, who spoke on international development, said the challenges of global meltdown were insurmountable. "I think that the relationship between the western economies and the emerging ones has for too long being based on the wrong premise. He said that partnership, rather than charity, should be the bedspring on which the larger part of the relationship rests.

"The economies of the west are showing signs of saturation, while there are huge developmental potential in the emerging economies. So let's build a relationship of mutual benefits." Nweke, 46, years, from Ibusa in Delta state, migrated to Belgium in 1993; he is currently the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora in Belgium.

I’m In Love With My 42-Year-Old Neighbour's Wife – Help Please

I’m in love with a beautiful woman and she feels the same about me, but she’s twice my age and lives right next door with her husband and son.
I’m 21 and she’s 42. I met her the day I moved back from uni. I haven’t found work so I’ve ended up back with my parents. It’s not what I planned but it’s cheap.
I was off to the shops when she stopped at her gate and said, “Hi.” My parents had said I was moving back home so she knew who I was. We chatted a while and we clicked straight away. She’s small and sweet with nice eyes and a body I wanted to wrap myself round from the start.
She said she looks after the house and her 10-year-old son but she joked that they don’t see too much of his dad. He works long hours in town and likes to spend weekends shut up in his study or out playing golf. It didn’t sound much of a marriage to me.
I came home one day to find her outside her house in the rain, while she searched through her handbag again and again for her key. My parents were both out at work so of course I invited her in.
I made her some tea and we sat on the sofa and talked. She told me her husband ignores her and she said that she’d leave if she could.
She looked really sad and I gave her a hug. It quickly turned into a kiss and then we did it on the floor.
We meet and do it now and then as much as we can. We’re deeply in love but I’m worried that I’ve no home and no money for her and her son.

She wrote: “Some family members of late Bisi Komolafe are not happy with her fiancee, Ijaodola. Some of them have accused him of killing her. They have also told him to immediately vacate Bisi’s apartment and leave all her properties including her Honda Pilot Jeep.
“They even said his fainting and wailing at Bisi’s burial were all staged. Bisi was pregnant for Ijaodola before she got ill and the pregnancy had to be terminated to save her life.”

Davido Attacks Asa Asika On Twitter, As His Elder Brother Resumes As Manager

Many of us have been wondering what caused the break-up between Davido and Asa Asika since both parties’ lips were sealed.
While some say Davido’s family want a more mature manager for their son, others allege the constant financial disagreements became too difficult to manage. There are even those who are of the opinion that it’s all a stunt.
A statement from Asa’s camp confirmed the split, stating that the separation was a mutual decision and the two remain good friends.
This has since been proven to be untrue, going by a recent message posted by 20 year old Davido on Twitter.
Some people just can never be real. U never f**king bite the hand that feeds you. Never! Loyalty, that’s why this sh*t is for family!’ he wrote last night
Although the message did not directly refer to his ex-manager, fans have reacted to his subliminal post with many supporting 22-year-old Asa, and some pleading that the two get back together.
Meanwhile, Davido’s elder brother, Adewale Adeleke, has since taken over as his manager.

A Cobbler With A Gun Arrested By Police

The suspects

A cobbler, Nonso Eze, has been allegedly found with a double barrelled gun in Maza Maza area of Lagos and promptly arrested by the police.

At the time of his arrest, 21-year-old Eze was in company with his friends, Ezeani Chukwujekwu and Joseph Lawesi.

But Eze, who is being detained at the Special Anti Robbery Squad in Ikeja, said the weapon does not belong to him.
“The gun belongs to my friend, Fryo. He is dead now. When I moved to Lagos in July 2012 to live with an uncle of mine in Ajangbadi, I made some friends at Alaba and one of them was Fryo. We were members of the Black Axe. Although I was initiated at Enugu, it is easy to know a fellow cultist anywhere you go because of the way we greet ourselves,” he said.

A few days before Eze’s arrest three weeks ago, Fryo was allegedly killed by a rival cult. He was said to have been shot at a drinking spot by two men who drove by on a motorcycle.

“When I heard that Fryo was dead, I was shocked. Chukwujekwu and Lawesi who were also Black Axe members wanted to flee Alaba immediately. I told them that I knew where Fryo hid his gun and that we should arm ourselves before leaving. I was not certain if all Black Axe boys were in danger and I wanted to ensure that we had some protection before leaving.

“I took my friends to Maza Maza park. Eze’s gun was hidden in an undeveloped parcel of land behind the park. I asked my friends to wait and went alone into the bush to retrieve the gun,” Eze continued.

Unknown to Eze, a peddler of Indian hemp was watching him nearby. A few minutes later, he had emerged with a bag in his possession.
Pleased with his discovery, Eze approached the hemp seller and bought N200 worth of Indian hemp.

“I gave him N1000 and demanded the balance. To my surprise, he refused to give it to me, saying that I had paid him with a N200 currency note. We argued over this until the disagreement turned into a fight. A crowd gathered and tried to intervene. Even my friends who were waiting for me were attracted to the noise. Then the hemp seller started dragging the bag with me. It was then that I realized the quarrel was a ploy to find out the contents of the bag.

“A taskforce official waded into the matter and insisted that I open the bag. When they all saw the gun in it, I was immediately arrested alongside my friends who were at the scene,” Eze said.

A 2009 graduate of a technical college based in the East, Chukwujekwu denied allegations of a reprisal attack against a rival cult known as Eiye Confraternity. He said, “We were not planning to kill anybody with the gun, neither did we rob anyone with it. As a matter of fact, all the members of the Black Axe in Alaba fled the place after Fryo’s death because no one could tell why he was killed.

We all joined the cult because of protection. Back home in Enugu, if you are not in a cult, you can be easily intimidated. I was already planning my return trip back home to Enugu before Eze delayed me with the idea of retrieving Fryo’s gun.”

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Umaru Manko confirmed the arrest. He said, “The three men were arrested at Maza Maza park after the Satellite police division, got a distress call concerning some robbers who were dispossessing motorists of valuables. The DPO led a team to the park and the suspects were duly apprehended and transferred to SARS. They will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.”

Messi Will Win FIFA Ballon d’Or Next Monday –Rijkaard

Former Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard says Lionel Messi will win the best player award on Monday in an interview with FIFA.com.

It’s been almost a year since you took over as Saudi Arabia coach. How has it been so far?
It hasn’t been easy, but we knew that from the outset. I think that our last two matches have seen us break free of a vicious circle of bad results, with a late win over Congo and a great performance in holding Argentina to a draw. This means we can start looking forward.

In a previous interview, you said there was a plan in place for the future of Saudi football, and that it was based on youth. How is it working out?
Like we wanted it to. Lots of people are putting in a lot of hard work. We’ve got Spanish coaches who are working on a daily basis and a lot of great stuff is being done with younger players, starting at around age 12. It’s all excellent, but of course one shouldn’t expect to see the benefits tomorrow. These players are only 10 or 12 years old and it will be another decade before the results come through.

That said, this has to be done. Look at Japan for instance. Ten years ago they started working on a similar plan and now they are enjoying success from that. Success is built on organisation, determination and experience, not to mention following the regulations, so of course it’s no easy matter.

Saudi Arabia exited in the third round of Asian Zone qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. Has the squad’s disappointment at missing out on a second successive edition of the tournament subsided at all?

To be perfectly honest, I’ve no idea. We’ve recently started placing more and more responsibility on the shoulders of younger and less experienced players, like the team that faced Australia in the last match of our qualifying campaign. We are trying to create a blend of youth and experience, as I said before, and given the recent results against Congo and Argentina (3-2 and 0-0 respectively) it looks like we can create something new here.

Did the Netherland’s early exit from UEFA EURO 2012 surprise you and what is your take on their lack of form?

No-one expected it before the tournament, but during the competition it became clear that all was not well with Dutch team. This is football, and if you’re not in the right place at the right time and you don’t perform well then things like this are going to happen. That’s the beauty of the game. Unfortunately it happened to the Netherlands this time, but it can happen to anyone.

You spent five years as coach of Barcelona. What are you memories of your time at the club?
Of course, five years is a long time. We went through some tough times and some excellent ones, and it’s only natural to dwell on the positives. I’m happy because I had the chance to work with a major club like Barcelona with so many star players, so I have wonderful memories of the place.

You managed to end a lengthy trophy drought at Barça. Would you say you laid the foundations for Barcelona’s recent domination?

Definitely not. I was just passing through. I had a lot of success, of course, but whatever was achieved was due to a group effort on the part of all the players. That said, I must have had a good relationship with the players because otherwise I wouldn’t have won two league titles and the Champions League.

Basically, I think it comes down to the fact that Barcelona has for many years immersed its younger players coming through the cantera in the club’s footballing philosophy, helping them create their own football culture. The coach’s role is to acclimatise to this way of playing. It was easy for me because I’m Dutch and I played at Ajax, so once I felt comfortable at the club I had a wonderful time.

Barcelona are famous for their eye-catching style of play. If you were coaching a side against them, what tactics would you use?
There’s no magic bullet, but you have to adapt to their style. Most of the clubs who have had success against Barcelona have relied on a highly organised and disciplined defence. Inter Milan and Chelsea have both sent Barcelona out of the Champions League and then you have Real Madrid (who won La Liga in 2011/12). You could call it the ‘Jose Mourinho recipe for success’, which he began while he was at Chelsea. If you play Barcelona that way ten times, you might beat them once, but it certainly doesn’t guarantee success.

You are one of a number of big names tasting coaching in Asia, with Marcello Lippi in China PR and Diego Maradona’s time in UAE. Are these personalities helping Asia close the talent gap on the rest of the world?

They are not really helping because these are such short-term projects. You have coaches from major footballing nations who come to work for a year for massive wages, and then they turn it all over to new coaches who have to start from scratch. This doesn’t help football on the continent.

Next Monday the winner of the FIFA Ballon d’Or will be announced. Who do you think will take it?
I’m going for Lionel Messi, because I think he’s the best player on the three-man final shortlist and he’s performed brilliantly this year.

You have worked alongside Messi. What do you think of him as a man both on and off the pitch?
He’s an incredible person. Messi is not simply a uniquely talented footballer. He’s also strong mentally, very bright and exceptionally dedicated to his job. Personally speaking I enjoy watching him play and I’m deeply proud of him and what he has achieved. Quite simply, he’s the best.

Suspected Lagos Thug Arrested By Police

Jarmani
Jamiu Adetutu, aka Jarmani, has been arrested by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos for allegedly assaulting an Ikorodu, Lagos resident named Nurain Lani.

Before his arrest, Jarmani was allegedly notorious for molesting residents of Ilemere, Orupodi, Ibeshe and other parts of Ikorodu in company with a gang of hoodlums. His latest victim, Lani, who is a trader, was said to have dared to confront him over allegations that he had turned a thorn in the flesh of residents.

Lani said he only asked Jarmani to stop molesting the residents of Ilemere, Orupodi and Ibeche communities. And for his ‘effrontery’ he got the beating of his life from the thug and his gang of hoodlums.
“He attacked me at 10 am on November 16, 2012. I was on my way to the place where I am building my house. He told his boys that I was a threat to him and ordered them to attack me. He said I had the guts to challenge him for extorting money from landlords in the area.

“I was beaten up and my money, about N17,000, was stolen along with my cell phone and wristwatch. Also he hit me on the head with the butt of his gun. After he had beaten me, I went to report the incident to Ipakodo Police Station.
“ I wrote a statement and they gave me a form and told me to go to a general hospital. I lost consciousness due to the beating. When I woke up, I learnt that some of the landlords rushed me to the hospital,” Lani said.

The trader said Jarmani was a non-native of Ikorodu who had allegedly managed to encroach on some people’s land in the area, adding that the suspect often boasted of being above the law because he had friends in the police.
He said that residents of the communities had cause to believe Jarmani’s claims of immunity because each time he was arrested, he would be seen walking freely in the area a few minutes later.
Lani continued, “Most of the landlords have been complaining about Jarmani, but they could not report his activities to the appropriate authorities for fear of losing their lives. He goes around bragging that he has friends in the police and there is nothing that anyone can do to him.”

However, the long arm of the law finally caught up with Jarmani. After he was arrested, he was taken to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Adeniji Adele Street, Lagos and it was discovered that he had different charges pending.
A police source told CRIME DIGEST that Jarmani would have a hard time wriggling out of the present charges due to the pending cases

The Police Public Relations Officer of the FSARS, DSP Lekan Ogundare, confirmed the arrest of the alleged thug.
He said that Jarmani was arrested at Ibeshe area of Ikorodu for criminal conduct. The PPRO corroborated the top police source claims stating that indeed, Jarmani was wanted at the FSARS for various offences.

The PPRO added that it was not impossible that Jarmani has a friend in the Police Force but it would not hamper their investigation.
“Men of the Rapid Response Squad caught and brought Jarmani here. We were not told that he was arrested with anybody, but we found a firearm on him. He denied knowledge of the firearm, but that is subject to investigation. He is well known to residents of Ikorodu and some of them have come to complain about.

“It is not impossible for him to have friends in the police, but that will not disturb our investigation. If you are my friend and you go against the law you won’t be my friend again because I would treat your case according to the law. He was arrested for criminal conduct and when he was brought here, we found out that he has other charges pending.

“We shall carry out our investigation and unify all the charges against him. Upon the conclusion of our investigation, he will be charged to court. He still has a different case of assault to face at Ibeshe where he injured someone. That matter is being handled by the Lagos State Police Command,” Ogundare said.

Oyo Gov’t Clamps Down On Brothels

Ajimobi

The Oyo State Government on Friday clamped down on brothels operating in residential areas to curb their influence on young persons.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Habitat, Mr. Lowo Obisesan, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan that the action was to discourage brothels from operating in residential areas.

“Operating brothels in residential areas shows irresponsibility on the part of the owners, who do not care about the impact on children, who are exposed to such acts of indecency. “Reports from the affected communities have reached us as parents abhor the acts of immodesty shown to their children as the result of the existence of such brothels.

“Brothels should never be located in residential areas. This is illegal and we will not tolerate it. We will go round the state and ensure that anybody operating such centres will be brought to book,” Obisesan said.

On the distribution of relief materials to affected flood victims of last year, he said plans were underway to distribute to all concerned before end of the third quarter.

“The donations are already being used in the reconstruction of affected bridges, roads and drainages, and the relief materials will get to all concerned before the end of March,” he said. Obisesan also said that mobile courts would be set up in all the 33 local government areas in the state to handle all cases pertaining to the environment.

Gunmen Abduct PPMC Official

The Rivers State Police Command on Friday confirmed the abduction of a senior staff of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, Okrika Area Office, an affiliate of the Port Harcourt Refining Company.

The spokesman for the command, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Ugwuegbulam described the victim as a deputy manager at the PPMC, adding that the manager was abducted at Ozuoba on the outskirts of Port Harcourt on January 3.

“The details of the incident are still sketchy. Our anti-kidnap unit has commenced investigation into the incident.

“We will give you more details as soon as we get them,” he said.
He said no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction and no ransom had been demanded.

20 Inmates Escape In Attempted Jailbreak At Sagamu Prison

No fewer than 20 inmates of the Sagamu Prison in Ogun State on Wednesday morning revolted and escaped from the facility.

Our correspondent learnt that during the attempted jailbreak which occurred around 3.am, some of the inmates as well as prison officials were seriously injured.

The number of casualties could not be confirmed but sources who pleaded not to be named told our correspondent that it was not unlikely that some of the prisoners might have been killed during the attempted jailbreak because of the heavy gunfire booming from inside the prison while the violence lasted.

Expended bullet shells still littered the prison yard’s surroundings on Wednesday morning when our correspondent visited the area.
The source added that the revolt by the violent prisoners who used all sorts of materials as missiles and weapons was however later contained by the members of the Armed Squad of the prison service who were initially taken by surprise and had to call for reinforcement.

The escapees were said to have bored a large hole in the wall at the back of the prison through which they escaped in the confusion caused inside the prison by their unexpected violent revolt.
It was also learnt that the attempted prison jail-break was aided by some yet-to-be ascertained “external forces in collaboration with some insiders.”

One of the run-away prisoners returned voluntarily to the prison yard while another was said to have surrendered himself to the police.

Our correspondent also gathered that some prison officials were already being interrogated by the police over the attempted jailbreak at the facility located on Prisons Street, Isale-Oko, Sagamu.
The Controller General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Mr. Zakari Ohinoyi Ibrahim, confirmed the attempted jailbreak at the facility during an inspection of the Sagamu Prison on Friday.
Ibrahim told newsmen who were not allowed into the prison yard that four of the fleeing prisoners had been re-arrested and brought back to the prison.

The NPS boss, who spoke after inspecting the prison, however said that an investigation team had been put in place to ascertain the causes of the attempted jailbreak. He vowed that any prison official found culpable would be dismissed and prosecuted.

“The essence of the visit is a follow-up to the seriousness we attach to the issue of security because security is one of our major mandates in the prisons. This administration has said it over and over again that we will not tolerate any breach of security, especially when it points at any form of negligence.

“And if it goes beyond administrative negligence with criminality, we’ll bring in the police and other sister agencies so that we prove that we’ll not tolerate any lack of commitment to work, especially the one that touches on security.

“So, we have some issues here and that’s why I’m here. The issue is that there have been some escapees here. So, I came personally and even before coming I had sent a high-powered team here.
“I’m following up to ensure that the right thing is done and that any staff found culpable would face the full wrath of the law which will include dismissal and it could also include prosecution.”

“What I can tell you now, because full investigation is on, is we have about twenty escapees and some of them have been arrested now and full investigation is on. About four of them have been arrested. But what you must just go with now is that any staff that is found culpable would be dealt with accordingly,” Ibrahim said.

On the number of casualties recorded during the attempted jailbreak, the prisons service boss said, “Don’t worry, I’ve told you investigation is on and you should also know that when there is an incident like this there should be full investigation. Investigations are on. I’ve addressed the staff and I’ve told them we would not give room for half commitment. The commitment has to be full, total and even with the situation we have in the country now, we would not want anybody who would unnecessarily want to embarrass us because if you are not ready you move. There is no choice. You either remain and go by the law and work hard with full commitment. We are fully committed to this job and we want to work as a team but if you want to distract us or bring things that would embarrass us, we’ll tell you to go. But it will be better for those who don’t want to stay to go than for us to push them out because we are serious. Security is not something that we’ll play with at all.”

He stressed that the ongoing investigations into the incident would prove whether external forces played any role in the attempted jailbreak, noting that the integrity of the prison’s structure had not been compromised.

“External influence? Investigations would prove that. In terms of the structure, you can see the wall is solid and on top we have fence wire. Everything is okay but we are talking about the human beings now, the human factor and I’m telling you that if investigation indicts any person that has not done his job the way he’s supposed to do it, it can lead to dismissal and even prosecution and the person may change uniform,” Ibrahim warned.
