Akwa Ibom State Government To Punish 35 Principals For Misconduct and Negligence

Godswill Akpabio

Akwa Ibom State Government said it will punish 35 secondary schools, their heads and teachers for gross misconduct and negligence.
The Education Monitoring Team, that visited secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area, said they were
shocked to have found out that more than 35 teachers, including their heads were either absent from schools or refused to teach the pupils.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor on Education Matters, Mr. Jerry Emah, who decried the nonchalant attitude had stated this on Monday in Akwa Ibom.
He stated that 16 out of the teachers and principals were from Community Secondary Grammar School, Ikot Akpabio; eight from Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Eba, and 13 from Etinan Community Comprehensive Secondary School.
Emah said, “From the information we have, some of these teachers did not come, some came late, while others refused to teach when they had classes.
“This is a clear case of lack of discipline and commitment to their duties. It is instructive to note that many of these teachers have their children and wards in private schools where they are monitored from the hours of 7am to 4pm.
“These teachers abandon other people’s children and turn around to condemn public schools despite the huge salary, allowances, and incentives the state
government is paying them.”
The SSA to the Governor on Education assured that the teachers would be dealt with appropriately.
“We can’t condone this act of gross indiscipline. We will use them as examples for others.”
