"It's Time For Ivory Coast To Win The Nations Cup"- Didier Drogba
Captain of the Ivory Coast football team, Didier Drogba says now is the time for his team to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy.
The striker, who now plies his trade in China, believes this is the best opportunity for the Ivorian team to win the tournament.
The Elephants missed out on the trophy in 2006 against Egypt and in 2012 against Zambia. With Drogba aging in football years, South Africa presents his best opportunity to win the trophy.
‘It would be great to win the trophy now. Honestly, we are getting tired of losing out each time. We showed great solidarity against Senegal (in the qualifiers). We fought together, everybody gave of himself and this helped us to win. And now everybody expects a trophy. We hope to give the cup to our country’ said Drogba.
Drogba leads the golden generation of Ivorian footballers such as the current African footballer of the year Yaya Toure, Didier Zokora and Emmanuel Eboue. Other players include Gervinho, Arouna Kone and Salomon Kalou.
Arsenal winger, Gervinho says the African Cup of Nations would be the cherry on top for Drogba’s glittering career. ‘The Africa Cup of Nations is the only thing left he wants to get for Cote d’Ivoire because he has brought us so much already’, he told Goal.com. ‘I hope he will be successful. We will be with him. We will support him at the best of our abilities for him to be able to give this to the nation.’
Didier Drogba will lead the Elephants to face Togo in the opening group match of Group D on January 22.
