Lagos PDP Denies Endorsing Obanikoro

Senator Obanikoro Lagos PDP denies endorsing Obanikoro
Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State on Sunday denied endorsing, Senator Musliu Obanikoro, as its governorship candidate for 2015 general elections.
Mr Taofik Gani, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, made the clarification in a statement in Lagos that PDP had not endorsed Obanikoro.
He said that the news of the endorsement of Obanikoro was “false and meant to ferment trouble within the party’’.
“We disassociate our party from the news that we have endorsed Obanikoro or already looking in the direction of any particular person to become the party’s governorship candidate for the 2015 election in Lagos State.
“The speculation is orchestrated to cause disaffection within the Lagos PDP,’’ he said.
Gani , however, blamed the speculations on the mischief of opposition political parties.
“We are saying emphatically that we have not endorsed nor focused on any particular person to be our governorship candidate.
“Presently we are occupied with laying the conducive environment for free and fair primaries as may be directed by our national headquarters.
“Our party is a fully democratic party and we don’t intend to deviate from that identity, especially in selecting our candidates at all levels in all elections.
“We know that the certain opposition party is not comfortable with the new Lagos PDP popularity.’’
Obanikoro was the party’s candidate in the 2007 governorship election, while Dr Ade Dosunmu was the candidate in 2011.

Ronaldo’s Brace Saves Madrid, Barca Outclass Espanyol

Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid celebrates scoring his sides opening goal during the la Liga match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Camp Nou stadium on October 7, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain.

Real Madrid got the better of Real Sociedad, winning a pulsating game 4-3, despite playing for 84 minutes with 10 men.
Karim Benzema had swept the champions into the lead after just 90 seconds but Jose Mourinho’s decision to once again leave Iker Casillas on the bench backfired just six minutes in as Antonio Adan brought down Carlos Vela inside the area and was rightly sent-off.
Xabi Prieto slotted home the penalty on what was to be a memorable afternoon for him and both sides exchanged further goals before half-time as Sami Khedira put Madrid back in front only for Prieto to level again five minutes later.
Cristiano Ronaldo then looked to have sealed the points with two goals in two minutes midway through the second-half, but Sociedad were given another lifeline when Prieto completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining.
However, the visitors themselves were reduced to 10 men on 80 minutes as Dani Estrada was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Ronaldo and the Basques failed to muster another serious effort on goal.
Tito Vilanova returned to the Barcelona bench with the minimum of fuss as his side got all of their work done inside the first 30 minutes of the Catalan derby in a 4-0 win over Espanyol.
Manager Vilanova, back at the helm after a brief spell out for surgery on his parotid gland after contracting cancer for the second time, was given the easiest of nights as his stellar cast of players made life comfortable for him.
After Xavi had opened the scoring, Pedro then chimed in with a brace before Lionel Messi scored his first of the year with a penalty.
Pedro was twice denied a hat-trick by the offside flag while other chances also passed as Barca cruised.
Two goals from Iago Aspas and another wonderful strike from Alex Lopez were enough to hand Celta Vigo only their second win in 11 league games as they moved three points clear of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win over Valladolid.
Aspas enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a fine run and finish from Michael Krohn-Dehli’s through ball after just eight minutes, but Valladolid were back level moments later when Alberto Bueno converted from the spot after Javi Varas had brought down Javi Guerra.
However, Aspas restored the lead with a penalty of his own on the half hour mark and Lopez sealed the points seven minutes into the second-half with a brilliant strike from 25 yards that rocketed into the top corner.

“Real Madrid Fans Are Disrespecting Adan” – Mourinho Defends Dropping Casillas Again

Jose Mourinho has insisted that is not bothered about the fans jeering him, as long as they get behind the team.
The Portuguese manager was whistled at by Real Madrid fans at the Bernabeu, ahead of Sunday’s 4-3 win over Real Sociedad.  Mourinho dropped Casillas for the second consecutive game, but the club’s number one eventually came on, after Antonio Adan saw red.
“It’s perfect for me if the fans whistle me before the game and then support the team during the match,” Mourinho said after the game.
“I’ve told Adan ahead of the game that the whistles are not directed at him. The fans and the press don’t have a problem with him, but with me.
“In my opinion there’s a lack of respect toward Adan. He’s a Canterano and has been at this club for 16 years. There seems to be a problem with me, which is turning into a lack of respect to Adan.”
Mourinho also spoke about Adan’s red card, for a foul on Carlos Vela, which saw Madrid reduced to 10 men early on.
“I feel that [Raphael] Varane gave a poor pass and then Adan made a mistake as well. It’s probably a penalty as Sociedad could have scored, but it was not a red card for me,” he said
“I might be wrong here, but we always seem to get punished when a situation is doubtful.”
Real Madrid remain third in the Liga table with 36 points from 18 games.

Nigeria Police Promotes 1,944 Officers To Next Level

The Nigeria Police on Friday announced the promotion of 1,944 policemen, which it said was a “New Year Gift” for its officers.
A statement signed by the Force Deputy Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, said “the Inspector-General of Police, IGP MD Abubakar, in the pursuit of his agenda for a better welfare regime for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, graciously approved the promotion of One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-four (1,944) junior Police Officers within the rank of Constable and Sergeant, to their next ranks.”
The 1,944 beneficiaries of the new promotion are spread across all Police Commands and Formations within the country, including the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The statement added that all the beneficiaries of the promotion exercise had earlier attended and passed a special promotion course organized for them at the four premier Police Colleges located at Lagos, Orji-River, Kaduna and Maiduguri. The trainings were designed to prepare the personnel for the challenges and responsibilities of their new ranks.
The IGP charged them to see their elevation as a call to greater tasks and challenges, as they will be saddled with higher responsibilities. He reminded them of the need to be more dutiful, disciplined, courageous and patriotic in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the IGP has reiterated his commitment to the welfare and well-being of officers and men of the Force, particularly, those within the Inspectorate rank and file cadre whom he described as the “foot soldiers” of the Force. He promised to continue to do his best in conjunction with other relevant government agencies to promote their overall working conditions, particularly, as they commence a new journey into 2013.

Lagos State Government Set To Demolish 50 Houses

The Lagos State Government yesterday said 50 houses at Jakande Estate in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, failed a test recently conducted on the houses within the area, adding that the distressed buildings will soon be demolished.
The houses, (two and three storey buildings) had been tested by the State Raw Materials Testing Agency, following the collapse of a two-storey building in the estate in November 2012.
Two persons died in the incident.
In a stakeholders’ meeting, organized by the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the General Manager, Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, noted that the demolition was to avert disaster.
The parley also discussed the modalities for compensation and resettlement of the owners.
The stakeholders are to meet again on Monday and Thursday.
Meanwhile, Chairman, Ejigbo LCDA, Kehinde Bamigbetan, while reacting to the development, said the issue of relocating affected residents should be discussed fully to enable the people involved know where they stand.
Two sisters, Toyin and Bukola, both in their late 20s, were killed when a building collapsed in the estate last November.
The building, situated at Block M20, Jakande Estate, Church Street, Oke-Afa, Lagos, collapsed at about 12 midnight, killing the girls on the spot. Their mother reportedly sustained serious injuries.

Justin Bieber Reacts To Marijuana Photos

Pictures of Justin Bieber holding what appears to be a marijuana cigarette surfaced online over the weekend.
The pictures didn’t actually show Bieber inhale the blunt, and no one can see if what’s rolled inside is indeed weed, but the 18-year-old took to his Twitter account with some apologetic words.
“Every day growing and learning. Trying to be better. U get knocked down, u get up,” the “Baby” singer tweeted several hours after the images surfaced. “I see all of u. I hear all of u. I never want to let any of you down. I love u.”
Bieber, who kicked off his tour on January 5 in Salt Lake City, Utah, didn’t directly address the photos in his tweets. “Like I said…2013…new challenges. new doubters…Im ready,” he wrote. “We are ready. see u all tomorrow and everyday after that.”
Bieber has been tweeting messages for his haters for a few days now, though. Before the incriminating images even surfaced he was getting philosophical. “Another year. another year to be doubted. another year to work hard and prove them wrong. another year we are coming out of the gate strong,” he rhymed.[Vibe]

REVEALED: Reasons Why “Styl Plus” Broke Up

It is no longer news that the trio of Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme and Tunde Akinsanmi popularly called Styl Plus, who hit Nigeria’s music scene in 2002 with the smash singles, Runaway and Olufunmi, has gone their separate ways after nine years of doing music.
But what most might not know is selfish ego, fear of the unknown and dwindling musical fortunes, contributed to the group’s demise.
According to what we gathered, the group for a long time knew their brand was no longer formidable but were not willing to go down without a fight. The uncertainty of life outside the name ‘Styl Plus’ held them back, although, briefly.
A source disclosed, “It was only their first album that made an impact. The second album was barely felt and the other singles they dropped just didn’t make any impact. These guys knew the show was over long ago but they were scared of letting go. But now the sad truth has hit them that the brand is dead, they have all decided to go their separate ways,” the source said.
Another source hints that the real reason the group fell apart was because of pride: “They were so popular when Olufunmi hit the airwaves and they were everywhere.
“Repeated attempts to get them to relocate to Lagos where the action is, failed. Though, some members wanted to relocate but one of them who was doing oil and gas and government contracts refused and that is the real reason Styl Plus broke up. Right now, Zeal is feeling very bad about it and is making attempts to revive his career.
“There is even talk he is discussing with Don Jazzy to give him a shot at Mavin Records” the source squealed.

God Has Granted Me 1.3 Million Healings In 2013 — Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said that he had requested 1.3 million healings for Nigerians who will come to the Redemption Camp with one problem or the other this year, adding that God told him that 2013 would be a year of laughter for God’s children.

He made this known, amid a mammoth crowd, during the January Holy Ghost Service (HGS) held at the Redemption Camp, located at Kilometre 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, on Friday.

According to the cleric, the nature and magnitude of signs and wonders that would take place at the camp during 2013 monthly Holy Ghost nights would be phenomenal, adding that ailing Nigerians should come to the ground for their deliverances.

“I told God I want to ask for something big. I said in RCCG in 2013, I want at least 1.3 million healings. I’m happy to tell you that my Daddy told me ‘request granted.’ So it will be your fault, not mine, not God’s if you miss any of the Holy Ghost services for this year.

He reminded me that the Holy Ghost service started when I made a similar request way back in 1986. That time, I asked for a miracle for every member of the congregation. He said ‘okay bring them together and I will do what you ask.’

“He has promised me that in every Holy Ghost service this year, there will be massive healings. If you sit down at home, don’t blame me. I know God is able to heal everywhere, but there are grounds and there are grounds,” he noted.

In his message entitled “Wonders of His Names,” he took the congregation through the significance of names and Biblical examples of figures who had a change of name to fulfill destiny, concluding that a man cannot out-shine the name he bears.

“What is in a name? Everything is in a name. Your future is bound up in your name. What will happen to you in future is embedded in your name,” Adeboye, who narrated a glimpse of circumstances surrounding his birth, stated.

2015: Babangida, Buhari Others Begin Consultations

2015: Babangida, Buhari others begin consultations

The re-unification of the North ahead of the  2015 presidential poll is in progress.
The project, which has former military president  Ibrahim Babangida,  a respected former Minister of Defence, and ex-military head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari,as its arrow heads, entails rallying the entire North behind the bid for the return of the Presidency to that part of the country in the next election.
Political and opinion leaders across the three geo-political zones-Northwest,North central and North east- are being consulted to lend their weight to the cause, The Nation gathered yesterday.
The convener of the Northern Political Leaders Forum, Alhaji Adamu Ciroma,  a former Minister of Finance and other elders, may  be brought in in the course of the consultations.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that the initiative has been on discreetly for at least three months.
Five factors are said to have spurred the brains behind the project into action.
These include  alleged alienation of the North by the presidency in appointment and policy matters; unprecedented polarization /division of the region along religious and ethnic lines; the worsening security situation in the region; alleged  under-development of the North and the yawning  gap between the North and the South ; and the manner in which the South-South has allegedly divided the nation and  what is seen in the North as its  desperate plot to retain the presidency in 2015.
Said one source familiar with the issue: “In the last few months, Babangida, Buhari, a former defence minister and some select broad-minded Northern leaders like ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, have been holding consultations on how to reunite the North and reassert its relevance in national politics.
“Buhari is part of the group because his presidential aspiration has been a challenge to the North and without any pretence, the former Head of State commands a  large following such that his disposition could make or mar the reunification plan.
“Since 2011, the North has lost so much to political rancour and crises. The leaders believe that they cannot allow the situation to continue like this.
“The aftermath of the division in the North is the near relegation of the region in the scheme of things. So, the rapprochement would achieve two purposes: reunifying Northern leaders and all Northerners and assist the region to regain power or reassert its political influence in 2015.”
Continuing, the source said: “I am confident that Babangida, Buhari and others could salvage the situation with the help of other Northern leaders.
“It is when the leaders have reached an appreciable level that convener of the Northern Political Leaders Forum, Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, and other elders would now be involved.”
A highly-placed source in Atiku Campaign Organization, who spoke in confidence,  confirmed the reunification plan.
The source said: “We are aware that there are underground moves to reunite Northern leaders irrespective of their political leanings. All the leaders have no doubt realized that they must reunify.
“After bringing everyone together, these leaders will now sit down to  chart a direction for the North and its political relevance as a critical  region in Nigeria .
“We do not know how long the reunification would last but at the appropriate time, the leaders will make their position known.”
A source within the Northern Governors Forum said: “Talks are ongoing among Northern leaders, serving and strategic past governors, ex-ministers and political heavyweights.
“There is  likelihood that the North will change its direction from what it did in 2011. But the details are being worked out.
“This is not a question of zeroing in on any candidate at all. We are trying to define our interest and how to go about it. So far, there is a consensus that the North was not circumspect enough in 2011.”
The  Convener of the Committee of Concerned Northern Professionals, Politicians, Academics and Businessmen (CCNPPAB), Dr. Junaid Mohammed, however cautioned the leaders to go for credible leaders in 2015.
He said: “My reaction to the ongoing moves to reunite the North is that it is a welcome development. But welcoming it is not to encourage these Northern leaders to gang up. Rather, they should use it to redefine the focus of the North and help Nigeria ’s future.
“Northern leaders have made a mistake with the so-called zoning policy. They should retrace their steps. They should really come back and show that they have learnt some lessons from the errors they committed in 2011.
“They should not think that the presidency is a divine right of the North or not. They should re-unite to ensure that people who are just and fair are in charge of the affairs of this nation because the current leadership is neither fair nor just.”

Kirikiri Prisons

Irked by the escape of no fewer than 20 inmates of the Sagamu Prison in Ogun State, the Nigerian Prisons Service, has relieved the officer-in-charge of the facility, Mr. Omobitan, of his appointment.

Our correspondent gathered that Omobitan who was removed from office for alleged negligence of duty has been replaced with Mr. Ogunmodede who has taken charge of the prison.

It was learnt that some prison officials were being interrogated by the police over the jailbreak at the facility located on Prisons Street, Isale-Oko, Sagamu.
A top prison official who pleaded anonymity on Saturday said, “The officer-in-charge has been removed and has been replaced by another officer. He may face serious disciplinary action for negligence on his part.”
Some inmates at the prison had revolted and escaped from the facility last Wednesday.

During the jailbreak, some of the inmates as well as prison officials were injured in the melee.
The run-away prisoners were said to have dug a large hole on the wall at the back of the prison through which they escaped.

The Controller General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Mr. Zakari Ohinoyi Ibrahim, had on Friday after inspecting the prison in Sagamu, announced that an investigation team had been put in place to ascertain the cause of the jailbreak.

We’ll Mobilise Support For Jonathan In 2015 – S’South Groups

                               President Goodluck Jonathan
AHEAD of the 2015 presidential election, two groups from the South-South geopolitical zone of the country have vowed to mobilise Nigerians for President Goodluck Jonathan.

The groups said there was nothing wrong if the President decided to go for a second term in office.
According to them, the constitution was in support of any Nigerian running for a second term in office.
The groups, South-South Northern Alliance and South-South Youth Movement for Non-Violence, spoke with a source in separate telephone interviews on Friday.
They insisted that nothing would make them allow anyone from the North to intimidate Jonathan out of the 2015 presidential race.

The group’s national coordinator, Mr. Garry Stanley, said at the right time, his group would begin to sensitise the people on the need to give Jonathan a second chance.
Stanley explained that it would be unfair for some people in the North to ask a President from the Niger Delta to run for only one term, when the constitution did not stipulate otherwise.

He stated that the Jonathan administration had improved power supply across the country, even as he expressed optimism that the President would surprise Nigerians in 2013.
“Constitutionally, Jonathan is allowed to run and he has some unfinished business to complete. If you look at the power sector, it has improved and he is handling the security situation.

“The problem in Nigeria is like a wound and he (Jonathan) will heal it. President Jonathan is from the Niger Delta and we will soon begin to mobilise Nigerians for him,” he said.
The National President for the South-South Youth Movement for Non-Violence, Mr. Ndubuisi Emmanwori, also said though the position of the few in the North was normal in a democracy, it would not stop Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential election.

Emmanwori described most of the criticisms against the President as “non-constructive.”
According to him, some of the attacks on the current administration were laced with religious and ethnic bias.
He also urged the Boko Haram sect to put an end to the destruction of lives and properties and allow the President deliver on his election promises.
Emmanwori, however, pleaded with Jonathan not to disappoint Nigerians in 2013.

He said the year was likely to decide the fate of the President in 2015.

Some lawmakers have tasked President Goodluck Jonathan with ensuring proper implementation of the 2013 budget to forestall a recurrence of the failures the previous one had.

They said the National Assembly was set to exercise its statutory powers in the execution of the budget.

The National Assembly  had on December 20, 2012, passed a budget of N4.987tn for 2013. The lawmakers had raised the N4.924tn originally proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan by about N63bn.

Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke to our correspondent, said the House would carry out its responsibilities in ensuring that the budget was adequately implemented. She threatened that government offices which erred in the implementation process would be sanctioned.

She said, “As a National Assembly, we have carried out our statutory role by passing the budget. The implementation is left with the Executive. However, we are going to carry out our oversight function in the implementation.

“We will hold any ministry, department and agency responsible for its actions and inactions in the dispensation of funds for developmental projects. The 2012 budget did not fare well, as less than 30 per cent of it was implemented.”

Also, the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Adegbenga Kaka, said the Senate was not impressed with the implementation of the 2012 budget.

Kaka, who represents Ogun-East Senatorial District, said while the implementation of the recurrent budgetary allocation for 2012 was almost 100 per cent while the capital suffered a huge setback.

He said, “We felt bad with how the 2012 was poorly implemented. While the principal officers of the Senate are to determine the next line of action on the implementation of the 2013 budget, it is a considered opinion of the House that the implementation of the 2012 capital budget is extended till April 2013.

“As for the implementation of the 2013 budget, we planned that its implementation will begin on January 1, 2013. It is now left to the presidency to accept or not. The budgets were to run concurrently till April. The 2013 budget is still with the President for his assent.”
The Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Joy Emodi, had reportedly blamed the delay in signing the appropriation bill into law on delayed transmission of the budget to the President.

However, the National Assembly on January 2, 2013, through the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, denied the claim, saying the budget was sent to the President on December 21.
